Remove bunds blocking water into Yamuna: Delhi HC to Haryana

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Tuesday asked Haryana to remove the bunds that, according to the Delhi government, were blocking flow of clean water into the Yamuna and was leading to an increase in pollution levels in the national capital's water supply.

The direction by a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao came after the Haryana government stated in an affidavit that it will remove the bunds.

India: SC raps Centre on Assam National Register of Citizens

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The Supreme Court Tuesday came down heavily on the Centre over the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) process and said it is hell bent on not allowing the work to continue.

The top court rapped Ministry of Home Affairs for its plea seeking to stall the NRC work for two weeks keeping in mind the role of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the election duty.

India becomes world's 2nd largest LPG consumer

New Delhi, Feb 5 (PTI) The government's push to provide clean cooking fuel to every household has turned India into the world's second largest LPG consumer whose demand is projected to rise 34 per cent by 2025, Oil Secretary M M Kutty said Tuesday.

Speaking at the Asia LPG Summit here, he said active LPG consumers have grown at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent - from 14.8 crore in 2014-15 to 22.4 crore in 2017-18.

India: JK-based group Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen banned

New Delhi, Feb, 2019: The Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen, which has been fighting for "liberation of Kashmir", has been banned by the government of India, the Home Ministry said Wednesday.

In a notification, the ministry said the central government believes that the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) is involved in various anti-India activities, and its members are getting financial as well as logistic support from their handlers based outside India.

India: Petition in SC challenging central law on land acquisition near disputed Ayodhya site

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) A petition was filed in the Supreme Court Monday challenging the constitutional validity of 1993 Central law on land acquisition in Ayodhya near the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site.

The plea contended that Parliament has no legislative competence to acquire land belonging to the state.

India: Gadkari only one in BJP with some guts: Rahul

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday complimented Union minister Nitin Gadkari for his remarks that "one who cannot take care of home, cannot manage the country", saying he has guts and should also comment on the Rafale deal, "farmers distress and destruction of institutions".

The Congress president cited a report quoting Gadkari as saying that party workers should first fulfil their domestic responsibilities as "those who cannot do that cannot manage the country".

India: Sealing of Indo-Bangla border in Assam going slow

Guwahati, Feb 4 (PTI) Assam government Monday said sealing of the Indo-Bangla border in the state is going slow due to various reasons, including scarcity of funds to the implementing agency -- Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

In a written reply to a query by AGP MLA Satyabrat Kalita, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said putting up of barbed fence along the international border between India and Bangladesh was being done by the Centre.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Monday returned from abroad and met Congress president Rahul Gandhi at his Tughlaq Road residence.

India: CBI vs Mamata: SC to hear CBI's plea on Tuesday

New Delhi, Feb 4 : The Supreme Court Monday agreed to give an urgent hearing to applications moved by the CBI alleging destruction of electronic evidence related to the Saradha chit fund scam case by the Kolkata Police commissioner.

The top court will hear the probe agency's applications on Tuesday.

The CBI alleged that it has moved the application as an extraordinary situation has arisen in which the top police officials of the West Bengal Police are sitting on a dharna along with a political party in Kolkata.
