Sudan military leaders reinstate deposed prime minister

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan’s deposed prime minister signed a deal with the military on Sunday that will see him reinstated, almost a month after a military coup put him under house arrest. According to the deal, the military will also release government officials and politicians arrested since the Oct. 25 coup.

The country’s top general, Abdel Fattah Burhan, said in televised statements that Abdalla Hamdok will lead an independent technocratic Cabinet until elections can be held. It remains unclear how much power the government would hold. It would still remain under military oversight.

Saudi-led coalition says it attacked 13 Houthi targets in Yemen

Cairo, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The Saudi-led coalition has attached 13 targets during a military operation against the Houthis in Yemen, Saudi state news agency (SPA) quoted the coalition as saying on Saturday.

The operation hit weapons depots, air defence systems and drones' communication systems in Sanaa, Saada, and Marib provinces, the coalition said.

Israel, Egypt discuss new proposal for prisoner swap with Hamas

17 Nov 2021; MEMO: Israel and Egypt are discussing a new proposal for a prisoner swap between Israel and the Palestinian resistance led by Hamas, Haaretz has revealed.

The daily newspaper said that Israeli and Egyptian officials are working on drafting an agreement which includes new solutions for issues Israel is concerned by.

Egypt: 3 dead, hundreds injured after scorpion swarm in Aswan

15 Nov 2021; MEMO: Three people have died and almost 500 were injured following a scorpion swarm in Egypt's southern city of Aswan caused by thunderstorms since Friday, bringing many of them onto the streets and into peoples' homes. Many of the attacks occurred in the mountainous areas of the governorate.

Gadhafi’s son announces candidacy for president of Libya

CAIRO (AP) — The son and one-time heir apparent of late Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi announced Sunday his candidacy for the country’s presidential election next month, Libya’s election agency said.

Seif al-Islam submitted his candidacy papers in the southern town of Sabah, the agency said in a statement.

Gadhafi’s son was captured by fighters late in 2011, the year when a popular uprising toppled Gadhafi after more than 40 years in power. Moammar Gadhafi was later killed amid the ensuing fighting that would turn into a civil war.

West says new Sudan army-led council breaches democracy transition

CAIRO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - The United States and other Western powers expressed grave concern on Friday at the appointment of a new Sudanese ruling council by the general who led last month's coup, saying it complicated efforts to restore a transition to democracy.

The United States, Britain, Norway, the European Union and Switzerland also urged the security services to respect the right to free speech "without fear of violence or detention" ahead of protests set for Saturday by critics of the army's move.

Prominent Sudanese activist Mohamed Nagi Al-Assam arrested - doctors union

CAIRO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Prominent Sudanese activist Mohamed Nagi Al-Assam was arrested on Thursday morning, the doctors union he was a member of said in a statement.

Al-Assam was a prominent figure in the country's 2019 uprising and has been a vocal critic of the Oct. 25 military takeover.

Sudanese judge urges end to post-coup internet blackout

CAIRO, Nov 11 (Reuters) - A Sudanese judge on Thursday ordered telecoms companies in Khartoum to explain why internet services are still cut more than two weeks after a military takeover and two days after a court said connections should be restored.

Mobile internet services across Sudan have been cut since the military seized power on Oct. 25. The suspension has hampered efforts by pro-democracy groups to mobilise for a campaign of civil disobedience and strikes against the coup.

Egypt, Israel Amend Security Agreement, Allow More Egyptian Troops Along Borders

CAIRO, Nov 9 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian army announced yesterday, the amendment of the security agreement with Israel, allowing for more Egyptian border guards along the border area in Rafah city, north-east of Cairo.

A joint military committee succeeded, during a coordination meeting, in amending the security agreement by increasing the number of border guards and their capabilities in the border area, the Egyptian army said in a statement.
