CAIRO (AP) — The general leading Sudan’s coup has vowed to usher the country to an elected government. But Abdel-Fattah Burhan has powerful allies, including Gulf nations and a feared Sudanese paramilitary commander, and he appears intent on keeping the military firmly in control.

Burhan first gained prominence in 2019, when he and other top generals toppled Omar al-Bashir, under pressure from mass demonstrations against the autocrat’s 30-year rule.

CAIRO, Oct 26 (NNN-MENA) – Arab League (AL) Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, yesterday voiced concern over latest developments in Sudan, according to an AL statement.

Aboul-Gheit called on all the Sudanese parties to abide by the constitutional document.

“There are no problems that couldn’t be solved via dialogue. It is important to respect all the deals and decisions that have been agreed upon over the transitional period, until running the elections in the scheduled times,” the statement said.

CAIRO, Oct 26 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, said yesterday that, he cancelled the extension of the years-long state of emergency throughout the country.

“I am glad that we share together the moment that we have long sought, with struggle and hard work. Egypt has become, thanks to its great people and loyal men, an oasis of security and stability in the region,” Sisi posted on his official Facebook page.

26 Oct 2021; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday announced the lifting of a nationwide state of emergency which has been in place since 2017.

"I've decided, for the first time in years, to cancel the extension of the state of emergency throughout the country," Al-Sisi said on Facebook.

The president hailed what he described as "Egypt's great people and loyal men," stressing his country had become an "oasis of security and stability in the region."

CAIRO (AP) — Pro-democracy protesters blocked some roads in Sudan’s capital with makeshift barricades and burning tires Tuesday, a day after the military seized power in a swift coup widely denounced by the international community.

The prime minister and other senior officials in the transitional government who were arrested Monday by the military continued to be held at a military camp outside Khartoum, the capital.

19 Oct 2021; MEMO: Egypt's Zagazig Criminal Court in Sharqiya yesterday sentenced TV presenters Moataz Matar and Hossam Al Shorbagy to 15 years in prison each in absentia for contempt of court and joining the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Matar, a presenter on Al Sharq TV, and Al Shorbagy, who works at Mekameleen, were referred to trial in November 2019 after they accused a judge of misusing his judicial authority and position.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s government will soon require public servants to have a vaccination certificate or show a weekly negative COVID-19 test before entering their workplaces.

The government announced the new measures late Sunday. It said the requirements will be applied starting November 15. The measures also require public to show proof of vaccination to enter government buildings starting December 1, according to a government statement.
