World Bank leader arrives in Sudan, 1st visit in 50 years

CAIRO (AP) — The head of the World Bank has arrived in Sudan, from where he will give a virtual address to the annual meetings of the financial institution and the International Monetary Fund on Thursday.

David Malpass landed in Khartoum late Wednesday in the first visit for a World Bank president to the East African nation in more than 50 years, according to the prime minister’s office.

Egyptian Court Sentences Three Muslim Brotherhood Members To Death, Over Murdering Policeman, Civilian

CAIRO, Sept 29 (NNN-MENA) – An Egyptian court, yesterday, sentenced three members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death, and nine others to life in prison, over the killing a policeman and a civilian.

The crime dates back to 2014, when the convicted Islamists showered a policeman, who worked in securing ports, and his uncle, a driver, with fire, which caused their immediate death.

The Mansoura Criminal Court has also sentenced ten years in prison, for one person, over the same charges and acquitted six others.

Egypt opens largest sewage treatment plant in the world

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday inaugurated the world's largest wastewater treatment plant.

The Egyptian presidency said in a statement that 20 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.14 billion) were spent on building and preparing the facility, adding that it has a production capacity of 5.6 million cubic metres a day.

Water from the Bahr Al-Baqar plant will be transferred to North Sinai and used to irrigate 476,000 feddans (494 acres) of land.

Egypt arrests professor who criticised pro-regime media personalities

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian security forces have arrested an Egyptian media professor, Ayman Mansour Nada, who criticised media figures close to the regime.

In a series of articles circulated on social media, Nada said that the opposition media abroad had reached a wider audience among Egyptians than the media within Egypt.

In his article, Nada accused official agencies of exerting control over the media.

Egypt to tax social media influencers earning over $32,000

28 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egypt has said it will tax social media content creators earning more than 500,000 Egyptian pounds ($32,000) annually.

"Anyone who makes a profit in Egypt must be fairly taxed whatever their field of work is," said tax authority official Mohamed Al-Gayyer.

Another tax official, Mohamed Keshk, said that anyone who fails to comply faces jail time of up to five years for tax evasion.

Egypt detaining owner of dairy company who refused to cede assets: Amnesty

27 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian authorities are holding the founder of the country's largest dairy products and juices producer and his son in conditions that amount to torture because of their refusal to cede their assets, Reuters reported Amnesty International saying today.

There was no immediate response to a request for comment to Egypt's state information service.

HRW: UNDP should avoid whitewashing Egypt's human rights record

23 Sep 2021; MEMO: Human Rights Watch have slammed a press release issued by Egypt's United Nations Development Programme office which heaps praise on the Egyptian president.

The statement says Egypt has progressed towards comprehensive reform and prioritised the economy.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner congratulated Egypt on maintaining positive economic growth amid the pandemic through implementing bold economic reforms.

Human rights system improving in Egypt: Sisi

22 Sep 2021; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi yesterday claimed that his country is working to reinforce human rights, citing the launch of the National Strategy for Human Rights earlier this month, Al-Khaleej Online reported.

The remarks came as part of his speech to the UN General Assembly being held in New York.

Egypt: Suez Canal revenues up to 4.09 bln USD in Jan.-Aug.: statement

CAIRO, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's Suez Canal Authority (SCA) on Tuesday said the revenues of the canal in the first eight months of 2021 rose by 11.6 percent year on year to 4.09 billion U.S. dollars.

Some 13,317 vessels crossed the canal from January to August in 2021 compared with 12,482 ships a year ago, up by 6.7 percent, the SCA said in a statement.

The increase in revenues came as the SCA has been implementing a plan to widen and deepen the southern part of the canal.

Egypt Urges Israel To Revive Peace Talks With Palestinians

CAIRO, Sept 20 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, yesterday held a phone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid, and urged Israel to revive peace talks with the Palestinian side, to end their decades-long conflict, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in a statement.
