US waiving restrictions on military aid to Egypt puts it at risk of complicity in rights abuses: Amnesty

25 Aug 2021; MEMO: Amnesty International has said that waiving restrictions on US military assistance to Egypt risks America becoming complicit in human rights abuses.

The statement made by the advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa was in response to reported deliberations by the Biden administration to release $300 million of restricted military assistance to Egypt.

Egypt to prevent unvaccinated employees from accessing workplaces from October

23 Aug 2021; MEMO: The Egyptian government yesterday said it would not allow unvaccinated civil servants from accessing their places of work starting October.

"The decision is taken as part of government measures to prevent a fourth wave of the coronavirus," the Minister of Health, Hala Zayed, told reporters.

Zayed added that all civil servants at the education and higher education ministries would be "vaccinated before the end of September, in preparation for the start of the new academic year."

Egypt invites Israel PM for official visit to Cairo

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Head of Egypt's General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel yesterday invited Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to carry out an official visit to Cairo, media reports said.

In a meeting with Bennett, Kamel discussed the Egyptian efforts to advance the peace process and the procedures to maintain calm in all the Palestinian lands, an official Egyptian statement said, in addition to the latest developments in the relationship between Israel and Egypt.

UAE receives ex-Afghan President Ghani, family out of humanitarian concerns — ministry

CAIRO, August 18. /TASS/: The UAE has granted asylum to former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his family who fled Afghanistan earlier, the national WAM news agency reported, citing the UAE Foreign Ministry.

"The UAE received President Ashraf Ghani and his family in the country out of humanitarian concerns," the statement reads.

Arab League voices support for stability, development in Somalia

CAIRO, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Tuesday voiced full support for any steps that promote security and stability in Somalia.

In a statement, Aboul-Gheit hailed the positive results that have been recently accomplished for achieving national consensus as very important for running the delayed legislative elections.

He stressed that the AL supports all efforts for continuing the process until holding the presidential elections scheduled in October, and helping the Somali people to meet their aspirations for economic reform.

Arab Parliament Calls For Promoting Marine Security In Gulf, Arabian Sea

CAIRO, Aug 13 (NNN-MENA) – The Arab Parliament (AP), yesterday stressed the importance of intensifying Arab and international efforts, for promoting the safety and security of marine navigation in the Arabian area.

In a statement, the AP said, “navigation threats in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea, impact the regional stability and security and the international economic security.”

It explained that the transfer of the energy resources, depends basically on the sea routes in the region, which constitute the main artery to the international economy.

In Yemen’s north, Houthis face virus with outright denial

CAIRO (AP) — For three days last month, Nasser joined hundreds of others jammed into emergency rooms in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, searching for a hospital bed for his mother, who was struggling to breathe. By the time one became available, his mother was dead.

But her death certainly won’t figure in the country’s coronavirus numbers. Officially, there have been only four virus cases and one death in Yemen’s north, according to the Houthi rebel authorities who control the capital and surrounding provinces.

UAE real estate firm plans to invest $15bn in Egypt over next 2 years

11 Aug 2021; MEMO: The real estate firm Sky Abu Dhabi Developments is in the final stages of negotiations to invest $15 billion in Egypt over the next two years.

The figure includes more than $4 billion by the end of this year, Reuters reports. One of the projects will be on the North Coast of Egypt and the other in New Cairo.

Sky Developments launched its first project in March in the New Administrative Capital, Egypt's multi-billion-dollar new capital city that has been under construction since 2015.

Egyptian president, high-level UAE delegation discuss cooperation

CAIRO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi discussed on Tuesday the bilateral relations and cooperation with a high-level delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

During a meeting in Egypt's Mediterranean resort city of New Alamein, Sisi and the UAE delegation, headed by National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, exchanged views on bilateral economic and commercial cooperation, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

WHO's 2nd phase of COVID-19 origin-tracing proposal politicized, says former Egyptian diplomat

CAIRO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO)'s proposal, under the pressure of the United States, to conduct a second-phase COVID-19 origin tracing in China is politicized, a former Egyptian diplomat has said.

China has already received a WHO delegation which stayed for a long time to study the virus origin and concluded in a report that the lab leak theory was "extremely unlikely," said Ali el-Hefny, Egypt's former ambassador to China and former deputy foreign minister, in a recent interview with Xinhua.
