Russia resumes flights to Egyptian resorts after 6 years

CAIRO (AP) — Russia resumed flights to Egyptian resorts on the Red Sea on Monday, ending a ban that had lasted around six years following the bombing of a Russian airliner that killed all 224 people onboard.

The local branch of the Islamic State group said it downed the plane over Sinai in October 2015, shortly after the aircraft took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. At the time, Russian officials insisted that security procedures at Egyptian airports were insufficient.

Egypt’s Suez Canal Celebrates Arrival Of New Giant Dredger

ISMAILIA, Egypt, Aug 5 (NNN-MENA) – Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA), held a ceremony yesterday, to celebrate the recent arrival of a cutter suction dredger (CSD) named, Hussein Tantawy.

The ceremony was attended by SCA Chairman, Osama Rabie, and Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, who hoisted the national flag on the new dredger.

“The dredger is the largest and most advanced in the Middle East and Africa,” said Rabie during the ceremony, describing the new dredger as “an unprecedented addition to the SCA fleet.”

Egypt, South Sudan Ministers Discuss Investment Opportunities

CAIRO, Aug 5 (NNN-MENA) – An Egyptian-South Sudanese joint ministerial committee, discussed in Cairo, cooperation between the two countries, in several sectors, said Egypt’s international cooperation minister, who chaired the meeting.

The Egyptian-South Sudanese Joint Higher Committee meetings, addressed prospect cooperation between Cairo and Juba, in the fields of agriculture, water, irrigation, trade and education, Egyptian International Cooperation Minister, Rania al-Mashat said, in a statement posted on her Twitter page.

Egypt: Ex-presidential candidate Aboul Fotouh faces 5 terrorism charges

05 Aug 2021; MEMO: Egypt's State Security Prosecution has accused former presidential candidate Abdul Moneim Aboul Fotouh of ties to a terror group and spreading fake news, lawyer Khaled Ali revealed yesterday.

Taking to Facebook, Ali wrote that the hearing held for Aboul Fotouh, the head of the Strong Egypt Party, lasted five hours.

Aboul Fotouh was arrested in February 2018 upon his return to Cairo from London. The lawyer was investigated on the case 440/2018, which links him to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt: Al Jazeera journalist arrested at Cairo airport

04 Aug 2021; MEMO: An Al Jazeera journalist has been arrested at Cairo airport after flying from Doha to visit his family.

Rabee Al-Shaykh, a producer for Al Jazeera's Mubasher channel, was transferred to the Egyptian National Security Agency and questioned for several hours after being arrested on Sunday.

Egypt expresses confidence in Tunisian presidency to overcome political crisis

CAIRO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Egypt expressed full solidarity with the Tunisian people's confidence in the country's presidency to overcome the current political crisis, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Sunday.

Egypt also stressed "the necessity to avoid escalation and refrain from violence against state institutions," and praised the role of Tunisian national institutions in maintaining the country's security and stability.

Egypt's continuous state of emergency devastating for rights abuses

29 July 2021; MEMO: The continued application of the state of emergency in Egypt has had a devastating effect on human rights abuses, concludes the Committee for Justice (CFJ) in a recent report.

For decades Egyptians have suffered under emergency and martial law, "a whip in the hands of Egypt's rulers to strengthen their power and grip on society," according to the CFJ.

Egypt journalists call for release of political prisoners

26 July 2021; MEMO: Hundreds of Egyptian journalists have called for the release of all political prisoners, local media reported yesterday.

In an official note, the Journalists Syndicate called on the country's public prosecutor, the attorney general and the administration of the western Cairo Tora prison to free their colleague Hisham Fouad, who they said has been on a hunger strike for two weeks.

"Egyptian authorities must urgently intervene to provide the necessary health care to Fouad and save his life from danger," they said.

Egypt hosts training to boost space cooperation among African countries

CAIRO, July 25 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA) started on Sunday a space technology training course for 17 engineers and specialists from five African countries to boost their cooperation and exchange of expertise in the space field.

Running from July 25 to Aug. 5, the 12-day program provides theoretical and practical training for the trainees who are from Nigeria, Sudan, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya.

Egypt releases 2,075 prisoners in Eid al-Adha pardon

21 July 2021; MEMO: Egypt announced Tuesday the release of more than 2,000 prisoners on instructions from President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, according to state media, Anadolu Agency reported.

Al-Sisi issued a pardon for 2,075 prisoners to mark the Eid al-Adha holiday that commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son at God's command before the last-minute divine substitute of a ram.
