Egypt detains former editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram newspaper

19 July 2021; MEMO: The Egyptian Public Prosecution issued orders to imprison Abdel Nasser Salama, the former editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram newspaper, for 15 days pending an investigation into claims he financed terrorism.

Salama was charged with financing terrorism and joining a terrorist group established in violation of the provisions of the law; in reference to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Chinese FM meets with Arab League chief

ALAMEIN, Egypt, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit here on Sunday.

During the meeting, Wang said that Arab countries created splendid civilizations in history, and China sincerely hopes that they will continue to create new glories in the future.

Official: Sudan seeking debt relief from Gulf Arab nations

CAIRO (AP) — Sudan will seek relief from wealthy Gulf Arab nations, aiming to get as much as 60% of the African country’s $30 million in debt to them written off, the Sudanese finance minister said.

The announcement late Sunday by the minister, Gebreil Ibrahim, came after cash-stripped Sudan received a $14.1 billion debt relief from the Paris Club of creditor nations last week.

Chinese, Iranian FMs hold phone talks

EL ALAMEIN, Egypt, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation here on Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Wang said that China appreciates President Hassan Rouhani and the Iranian government for their positive contributions to developing China-Iran relations over the past eight years.

Arab League chief "disappointed" over Lebanese PM-designate Hariri's resignation

CAIRO, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit expressed on Thursday "great disappointment" over the decision by Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri to step down.

"The consequences of Hariri's stepping down may be dangerous for the future of the situation in Lebanon," the AL chief was quoted as saying in an AL statement.

Aboul-Gheit made the remarks from the U.S. city of New York where he is participating in a UN Security Council session on Libya, according to the statement.

Ever Given container ship leaves Egyptian waters

14 July 2021; MEMO: The Ever Given container ship that had blocked the Suez Canal in March left Egyptian waters at 4 a.m. local time following inspections at Port Said, a canal source said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Ship tracker MarineTraffic showed the Ever Given to be underway in the Mediterranean Sea north of the Egyptian coast.

Egypt offers support for Lebanon as Hariri arrives in Cairo

14 July 2021; MEMO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi today expressed full support for Lebanese Prime Minister-Designate Saad Hariri in his efforts to resolve a crippling economic and political crisis as he visited Cairo, Reuters reports.

Lebanon is battling an economic meltdown dubbed by the World Bank as one of the deepest depressions in modern history.

Egypt signs military cooperation protocol with Serbia

14 July 2021; MEMO: Egypt's Defence Minister Mohamed Zaki on Tuesday signed a military cooperation protocol with his Serbian counterpart, Nebojša Stefanović, in a meeting in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo.

The meeting discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, including "military cooperation and the exchange of experiences and knowledge between the two countries," according to a statement by the Egyptian Army.

Zaki lauded what he described as: "Deeply-rooted relations between Egypt and Serbia in the military field."

Egypt court upholds life sentences for top leaders

12 July 2021; MEMO: Egypt's highest criminal court has upheld the life sentences issued against ten senior members of the Muslim Brotherhood, including the group's Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie. The life sentences were issued over their alleged role in helping foreign militias penetrate the country's eastern border amid the 2011 uprising to create chaos and bring down the Egyptian state and its institutions.
