Egypt welcomes Russia's mediation in Ethiopia dam dispute

14 Apr 2021; MEMO: Egypt is counting on Russia's support in resolving the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) dispute, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said yesterday.

"We rely on Russia, through its relations with the three countries [in the dispute] and its capabilities and given its international prestigious impact and position, to push the various parties to refrain from unilateral acts," Shoukry said in a meeting held in the Egyptian capital Cairo with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

Egyptian, Qatari Leaders Exchange Wishes On Occasion Of Ramadan

CAIRO, Apr 13 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, held yesterday, the first phone conversation after the mutual diplomatic ties were resumed, the Egyptian presidential office said in a statement.

“President al-Sisi received a phone call from Qatari Emir on the occasion of Ramadan,” Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson, Bassam Rady, said.

Egypt: Ever Given will be seized until compensation paid

12 Apr 2021; MEMO: Ever Given, the ship that blocked the vital Suez Canal waterway for almost a week, will remain in the hands of Egyptian authorities until compensation is paid to the country's officials, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Osama Rabie, announced yesterday.

"We hope for a speedy agreement," Rabie told local media, adding that the "minute they agree to compensation, the vessel will be allowed to move."

Rights group warns of rising number of prisons in Egypt

13 Apr 2021; MEMO: The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) yesterday warned of the rapid increase in the number of prisons in Egypt, since the January 25 Revolution in 2011.

The network said in a report that the number of prisons in Egypt has reached 78, nearly half of them – 35 prisons – had been built after 2011 under the rule of coup leader and President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Egypt Unveils Discovery Of 3,000-Year-Old “Lost Gold City” In Luxor

CAIRO, Apr 11 (NNN-MENA) – An Egyptian archaeological mission announced the discovery of a 3,000-year-old “Lost Gold City” (LGC), in Egypt’s monument-rich city of Luxor.

An Egyptian mission, headed by renowned Egyptian archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, in collaboration with Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, found the city that was lost under the sand.

The city was known as “The Rise of Aten,” dates back to the reign of Amenhotep III, and continued to be used by king Tutankhamun.

3,000-year-old city lost in sands discovered in Egypt’s Luxor

CAIRO, April 9 (NNN-TASS) — A city that has been lost in sands and was founded more than 3,400 years ago has been unearthed in Luxor, south Egypt, Zahi Hawass, head of the Egyptian archeological mission that is responsible for the discovery, said.

According to the famous Egyptologist who used to head the Ministry of Antiquities, the city was built approximately around the time of Amenhotep III of the Eighteenth Dynasty (around 1388-1351 B.C.) and was thriving for decades after until the reign of King Tutankhamun (around 1332-1323 B.C.).

Egypt sentences Muslim Brotherhood acting leader to life

09 Apr 2021; MEMO: An Egyptian court yesterday sentenced Mahmoud Ezzat, the Muslim Brotherhood's acting general guide, to life in prison, local media reported.

State-owned Al-Ahram newspaper said the Second Terrorism Circuit court sentenced Ezzat to life in prison on charges of incitment to kill, possession of weapons and terrorising people.

Choices open in tackling GERD issue, cooperation is better: Egypt's president

CAIRO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi stressed on Wednesday that "all choices are open" in dealing with the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

"Don't touch a drop of Egypt's water," Sisi said during the inauguration of an integrated complex for secure and smart documents in Cairo.

He stressed all choices are open, but cooperation is better to reach a binding deal with Ethiopia on the filling and operation of the GERD.
