Earthquake in eastern Afghanistan injures 10 people

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Taliban has confirmed that at least 10 people were injured after an earthquake struck eastern Gayan district in Paktika province.

Abdul Wahid Rayan, director of Bakhtar, Taliban’s news agency, said the quake in the remote area happened late Monday afternoon.

On Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.1 quake near Khost.

Pakistan to get USD 4 billion from friendly countries to shore up reserves: Fin Min

Islamabad, Jul 17 (PTI) Pakistan is likely to get USD 4 billion from friendly countries this month to bridge a gap in foreign reserves highlighted by the International Monetary Fund, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has said, two days after the cash-strapped nation reached a deal with the global lender for the revival of a USD 6 billion loan facility.

Ismail on Saturday referred to the shortfall in foreign reserves highlighted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dawn newspaper said.

Pakistan strives to increase women's workforce participation for economic prosperity: president

ISLAMABAD, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Arif Alvi said on Saturday that his country has been making efforts to increase the workforce participation of women for the economic prosperity of Pakistan.

"Women make up almost 50 percent of the country's population and the provision of enabling conditions such as ensuring their safety and security at the workplace and providing quality education and skills to women is the priority of the government and society," the president said while interacting with a delegation of businesswomen here.

ISLAMABAD, Jul 15 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the Turkish Democracy and National Unity Day would always be remembered as an expression of the Turkish people’s unwavering trust in the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“It also reflects Turkish nation’s resolve to protect and uphold democracy,” he said in a tweet. 

The prime minister prayed for the departed souls of the martyrs to rest in peace.

Pakistan: PM exchanges Eid greetings with Iranian president

ISLAMABAD, Jul 10 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday held a telephonic conversation with President of Iran Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and exchanged with him Eid greetings besides discussing bilateral relations.

Underscoring the significance of historic ties between the two countries, marked by geographic proximity, shared history and mutual understanding, the prime minister reaffirmed his government’s strong commitment to boost bilateral relations in all areas of mutual cooperation, including trade, energy, electricity and people-to-people contacts.

Pakistan: TV anchor Imran Riaz released, days after arrest in capital

Lahore, Jul 10 (AP-PTI) A prominent Pakistani TV anchorperson was released Saturday following his arrest earlier this week near Islamabad and after a high court granted him bail in one case and dismissed other cases against him, a government attorney said.

Imran Riaz Khan was taken into custody on Tuesday even though weeks earlier a court in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, had ordered police not to arrest him and several other journalists over complaints accusing them of inciting hatred against the country's powerful military.

6 killed, over 10 injured in bus-car collision in Pakistan's Punjab

ISLAMABAD, July 9 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and over 10 others injured when a passenger bus collided with a car in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, officials said on Saturday.

The accident took place on Shakargarh Road in the Narowal district of the province when the bus driver lost control over the vehicle while overtaking and hit the car, district police officer Narowal Rizwan Omer Gondal told Xinhua.

Youngest Pakistani who scaled K2 is safe after going missing

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A Pakistani man who became the youngest climber of one of the world’s highest mountains is safe after going missing during an expedition to another dangerous peak, his father and an official said Thursday.

Last year, Shehroze Kashif scaled K2 at age 19. He and another Pakistani, Fazal Ali, went missing earlier this week after scaling Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest peak. That prompted the country’s military to launch a search for them after Kashif’s family issued an emotional appeal to rescue the pair.
