17 Feb 2020; MEMO: Senior officials in Iran and Iraq have decided to establish a joint committee to prosecute the US officials involved in the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, Iranian IRNA Agency reported.
IRNA revealed that the decision came during a meeting held on Sunday between the Iranian deputy justice minister for human rights and international affairs, Mahmoud Abbasi, with the Iraqi deputy prosecutor, Dhari Jaber Farhood and director of human rights and international cooperation of the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, Kamel Amin Hashim.
During the meeting, Abbasi described General Soleimani’s assassination as a crime and a dangerous act, pointing out that the late general arrived in Iraq as an “official guest in a sovereign country”.
Abbasi stressed that Iran and Iraq will follow up with General Soleimani’s assassination in international arenas and proposed to form the joint committee to investigate the legal and judicial aspects of the case.
During the same meeting, the Iraqi deputy prosecutor explained that the Iraqi judicial authorities have pursued the investigation into General Soleimani’s assassination from the beginning.
The director of human rights and international cooperation at the Iraqi Ministry of Justice highlighted that the US procedures that led to Soleimani’s assassination could be looked into in European courts and the UN Security Council, adding that the assassination case could also be prosecuted within the US.
The US were responsible for the assassination of General Soleimani shortly after arriving in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad last month.
