AMMAN, Feb 27 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan on Wednesday, launched the Aqaba-Amman Water Desalination and Conveyance National Project, the largest water project in the country.
The first phase of the project will annually generate 130 million cubic metres of water, while the project’s maximum annual capacity will be 350 million cubic meters upon completion, according to the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
The project will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer basis, in partnership with the private sector, Jordanian Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abul Saud said, during a ceremony to launch the project.
“The project will provide sustainable water resource for future generations in all parts of Jordan,” the minister noted.
The project will consist of a seawater conveyance system, a desalination facility in Aqaba, and a freshwater conveyance system, according to Saud.
Jordan is one of the poorest countries, in terms of water resources, as the water share per capita in the country, declined to fewer than 100 cubic metres per year over the past decades, according to figures from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
