NEW DELHI, May 19 (NNN-Bernama) — Pakistan has reduced this year’s export target for its mangoes prized for their sweetness and flavour.
The arrival of summer means the season of mangoes in South Asia, and Pakistan grows a huge variety of “the king of tropical fruits”.
Chaunsa, Langra, Sindhri, Dussehri and Anwer Ratol are among some of the popular succulent mango varieties exported to various countries.
However, higher temperatures and weather-related problems have caused a decline in mango output, forcing Pakistani exporters to slash their export target by 25,000 tonnes to 125,000 tonnes for the current season, according to a Dawn news report on Thursday.
Average temperatures were between 37 and 42 degrees Celsius in mid-March, higher than around 34 degrees Celsius last year, the report noted.
This year’s mango production is expected to be 900,000 tonnes compared with 1.8 million tonnes in 2021, Waheed Ahmed of the All-Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association said.
