UNITED NATIONS, July 27 (APP): Pakistan has underscored the need for adequately equipping U.N. peacekeepers operating in hot spots around the world with all critical enablers, including air assets and hospitals, to help them better achieve their mandates.

UN political affairs chief pledges to support Afghanistan in peace process

UNITED NATIONS, July 26 (Xinhua) -- UN Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said Friday that the organization remains committed to assisting Afghanistan in its peace process.

"The United Nations remains committed to assisting Afghanistan in its efforts for peace, stability and prosperity," DiCarlo told a Security Council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan.

This is an important year for Afghanistan, with the country -- marking 100 years of independence -- facing "an unprecedented opportunity for peace," said the UN political affairs chief.

Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi elected vice-president of a key UN body

UNITED NATIONS, July 26 (APP): The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the economic arm of the United Nations, unanimously elected Pakistan’s Ambassador to UN, Maleeha Lodhi, as one of its four vice presidents at an election held on Thursday.

Ambassador Lodhi’s election was by acclamation after her candidature was endorsed by the 54-member body.

She will now assume the Asia Pacific seat in the Bureau of ECOSOC, a principal organ of the UN mandated to deliberate on socio-economic and development agenda of the world body.

US SpaceX Falcon 9 carrier rocket with Dragon spacecraft blasts off to orbital outpost

NEW YORK, July 26. /TASS/: The US SpaceX carrier rocket Falcon 9 with Dragon resupply spacecraft blasted off on Thursday from Cape Canaveral (the US state of Florida) to deliver cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). The launch was broadcast live on SpaceX’s website.

The spacecraft was launched at 18:01 local time Thursday (1:01 Moscow time Friday) and is scheduled to dock with the ISS on Saturday. The Dragon resupply ship is carrying about 2.5 tonnes of cargo to the orbital station, including food and equipment for carrying out scientific experiments.

Iran test fires Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile — US media

NEW YORK, July 26. /TASS/: Iran has test fired a medium-range ballistic missile on Friday, Fox News television channel reported citing an unnamed senior official in the US administration.

According to Fox News, Shahab-3 ballistic missile was launched in the early hours on July 25 from the southern part of Iran and, after covering a distance of about 960 kilometers (600 miles) to the north of Iran, it landed in a desert not far from Tehran.

Financier Jeffrey Epstein found injured in jail cell

NEW YORK (AP) — Wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein was found on the floor of his jail cell with bruises on his neck early this week while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, a person familiar with the matter said Thursday.

It was not clear whether the injuries were self-inflicted or from an assault, said the person, who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Trump calls drenching of NYPD officers ‘unacceptable’

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump added his voice Thursday to the chorus of people upset about videos showing New York police officers getting drenched with buckets of water during a heat wave.

“What took place in NYC with water being tossed on NYPD officers was a total disgrace,” Trump tweeted. “What took place was completely unacceptable, and will not be tolerated.”

He called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to “act immediately,” though he didn’t say what action he believed the mayor should take.
