Indian PM's daily to-do list includes raising fuel prices, showing 'hollow' dreams of jobs: Rahul

New Delhi, Mar 30 (PTI) Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said his daily to-do list includes raising petrol, diesel and gas prices, making farmers more helpless and showing "hollow dreams" of employment to the youth.

Gandhi used the hashtag "RozSubahKiBaat" with his tweet attacking the prime minister on a range of issues.

India: 1,205 paramilitary personnel committed suicide in 10 years

New Delhi, Mar 29 (PTI) As many as 1,205 paramilitary personnel have committed suicide in the last 10 years with the highest 156 in 2021, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

He said 143 personnel committed suicide in 2020, 129 in 2019, 96 in 2018, 125 in 2017, 92 in 2016, 108 in 2015, 125 in 2014, 113 in 2013 and 118 in 2012.

Domestic problems, illness and financial problems are some of the contributory factors to the incidents of suicide, he said replying to a written question.

India: Central trade unions begin two-day nationwide strike

New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) Central trade unions on Monday began a two-day nationwide strike to protest against the government's alleged wrong policies that are affecting farmers, workers and people.

Talking to PTI Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), said, "The two-day nationwide strike by the joint forum of central trade unions has begun this morning".

India: President to confer Padma awards on late Kalyan Singh, 72 others

New Delhi, Mar 28 (PTI) President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday will confer Padma awards on 74 distinguished personalities, including former BJP leader late Kalyan Singh and actor Victor Banerjee, at a civil investiture ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This year, 128 Padma awards are being presented and the first civil investiture ceremony was held on March 21 during which 54 personalities were given the honour.

India sees 19 per cent rise in Tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2021

New Delhi, Mar 24 (PTI) The number of tuberculosis cases in India has seen a 19 per cent rise in 2021 over the previous year, according to the annual TB report released by Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday.

The total number of new and relapsed TB patients notified in India during 2021 were 19,33,381 as against 16,28,161 in 2020, the report showed.

India: Petrol, diesel prices hiked by 80 paise a litre, 3rd increase in 4 days

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise a litre each on Friday, the third increase in four days as oil firms recoup losses from holding rates during the period prior to the recently-concluded assembly elections.

Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 97.81 per litre as against Rs 97.01 previously while diesel rates have gone up from Rs 88.27 per litre to Rs 89.07, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers.

Indian EAM holds talks with Chinese FM Wang

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held wide-ranging talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

Ahead of the talks, Jaishankar tweeted, "Greeted Chinese FM Wang Yi at Hyderabad House. Our discussions commence shortly."

It was the first public comment by India on Wang's visit.

The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Delhi on Thursday evening in the highest-level visit between the two countries after the ties came under severe strain following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that began nearly two years ago.

India exports cross USD 400 bn milestone in FY22, Imports USD 589 billion

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) The country's exports for the first time crossed the USD 400 billion mark in a fiscal on healthy performance by sectors such as petroleum products, engineering, gems and jewellery, and chemicals, according to the commerce ministry's data released on Wednesday.

The merchandise exports rose by by 37 per cent to USD 400.8 billion in 2021-22 until March 21 against USD 292 billion in 2020-21. Previously, the outbound shipments had touched a record of USD 330.07 billion in 2018-19.

India: Farmers' organisation float new front for MSP law

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) After the agitation to repeal farm laws, a group of farmers on Tuesday floated a new front to press for their demand for a law for guaranteeing minimum support prices for farm produce.

Raju Shetti, a two-term Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra and leader of the Swabhimani Paksha, said a decision to launch the MSP Guarantee Kisan Morcha was taken at a meeting of various farmers' organizations here.

India: Lalu Prasad discharged from AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad, who was brought to AIIMS here on Tuesday, was kept under observation overnight in the emergency department before being discharged at around 3 am, official sources said.

The former Bihar chief minister, 73, was brought to AIIMS here at around 9 pm on Tuesday after being referred by a medical board of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, as his health condition deteriorated there.
