India: J-K Budget presented in LS

New Delhi, Mar 14 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday presented a Rs 1.42 lakh crore budget for the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir for the year 2022-23 in the Lok Sabha, amid demands from the opposition that it be given adequate time for studying the proposals.

Sitharaman also presented the supplementary demands for the year 2021-22 totalling Rs 18,860.32 crore for the Union Territory and moved a motion seeking suspension of certain rules to allow the House to take up the discussion on the same day.

Indian Govt orders probe into accidental missile firing to Pakistan

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) The Defence Ministry on Friday said a technical malfunction in the course of a routine maintenance led to the accidental firing of a missile on March 9.

The ministry said the missile landed in an area of Pakistan and noted that the "incident is deeply regrettable".

India: Let MCD polls take place: Kejriwal to PM Modi

New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to let MCD elections take place in the national capital, saying postponing polls weakens the democratic system.

His remarks came after the Delhi State Election Commission sought the advice of legal experts on if it can still hold polls for the three municipal corporations here following a communication from the Centre for their unification.

No safe corridor for students stranded in Ukrainian city of Sumy: India tells UNSC

United Nations, Mar 8 (PTI) India, which has managed to safely bring back over 20,000 of its nationals from Ukraine amid the ongoing war, has said that it is deeply concerned that despite its repeated urgings to both Russia and Ukraine, the safe corridor for Indian students stranded in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy did not materialise.

India has been consistent in calling for an immediate end to all hostilities, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti told the UN Security Council meeting on Monday on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Indian PM Modi to speak to Putin

New Delhi, Mar 7 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday afternoon, official sources said.

The telephonic talks will follow Modi's scheduled conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Modi's interaction with the two leaders comes amid India's all out efforts to evacuate its nationals, mostly students, from Ukraine, facing attack from Russia.

Modi had spoken to Putin earlier too when the war began.

Indian Navy successfully test-fires Indo-Russian BrahMos missile

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Indian Navy on Saturday said it has successfully test-fired the advanced version of the BrahMos missile, demonstrating the combat readiness of its frontline platforms.

A Navy spokesperson said the missile hit the target with pin-point accuracy.

"The long-range precision strike capability of advanced version of the BrahMos missile was successfully validated," the official said.

India: DDA holds yoga session in park near Yamuna bank

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Seeking to connect people with nature, a yoga session was held on Saturday in a park near the Yamuna bank here as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, DDA officials said.

The event at the Golden Jubilee Park, Asita West near Old Railway Bridge, was hosted in a bid to revive the ancient connection of the Yamuna river with people by bringing more and more people closer to nature.

India: Rape-murder case: SC stays operation of death sentence

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court has stayed operation of the death sentence awarded to a man convicted for raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl in Dehradun in 2018.

The apex court, which was hearing an appeal filed by the convict against the January 2020 verdict of the Uttarakhand High Court which had confirmed the death penalty awarded to him by a trial court, directed that psychological evaluation of the appellant be done and its report be placed before it.

India: Refrain from feeding monkeys inside court premises: Delhi HC

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) The Delhi High Court has asked advocates, litigants and staff members to strictly refrain from feeding monkeys inside the court premises.

In a circular issued by its administrative branch on Friday, the high court also requested all concerned persons to ensure that the windows of court buildings and all blocks are not left open or unattended.

NMC says foreign medical graduates can complete internships in India

New Delhi, Mar 5 (PTI) Against the backdrop of the Ukraine crisis, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has said foreign medical graduates with incomplete internships due to situations beyond their control like COVID-19 or war can finish the same in India.

In a circular, the NMC said the same may be processed by the state medical councils, provided the candidates have cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination before applying for completion of internship in India.
