India logs 268,833 Covid cases, 402 deaths in a day

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) India registered 2,68,833 new Covid infections in a day taking the tally to 36,850,962, which includes 6,041 Omicron variant cases, according to the Union Health Ministry data on Saturday.

With 402 more deaths, the number of people who have succumbed to the viral disease has risen to 485,752. The case fatality rate was 1.32 per cent.

A total of 6,041 Omicron cases has been detected so far, an increase of 5.01 per cent since Friday, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India: Won't let any attempt to change status quo along India's border: Gen Naravane

New Delhi, Jan 15 (PTI) The Indian Army's message is clear that it will not let any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo along the country's borders succeed, Army Chief Gen M M Naravane said on Saturday.

In an address at the Army Day Parade here, he said last year was extremely challenging for the Army and cited the developments on the northern borders with China.

Delhi HC admits M J Akbar's appeal against acquittal of Priya Ramani in defamation case

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Thursday agreed to examine former Union Minister M J Akbar's appeal against the trial court order acquitting journalist Priya Ramani in his criminal defamation case over her allegations of sexual harassment.

Admit. List in due course, said Justice Mukta Gupta who had issued notice to Ramani on the appeal in August last year.

India: Eminent rocket scientist S Somanath appointed ISRO chief

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) Eminent rocket scientist S Somanath has been appointed as the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as well as the Space Secretary, a Personnel Ministry order issued on Wednesday said.

Somanath, who is at present Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), will succeed K Sivan who completes his extended tenure on Friday.

India: SC appoints panel headed by ex-judge to probe 'security breach' during PM's Punjab visit

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday appointed a five- member committee headed by former apex court judge Indu Malhotra to probe the security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Punjab.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana also appointed the Inspector General of the National Investigation Agency, Director General of Police of Chandigarh, the Registrar General of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Additional DGP (Security) of Punjab as members to the Justice Malhotra panel.

US Climate Envoy John Kerry to visit India soon

While some officials said the visit should take place by the end of this month depending on the Covid situation, others said there is no final fix on the dates so far

India: Cabinet minister Nitin Gadkari tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has tested positive for COVID-19 and is in home quarantine.

In a tweet, he said he has "mild symptoms" and is under home quarantine.

"I have tested positive for Covid 19 today with mild symptoms. Following all the necessary protocols, I have isolated myself and I am under home quarantine. I request all those who have come in contact with me to isolate themselves and get tested," Gadkari said in a social media post.

India: BJP chief Nadda tests positive for coronavirus

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) BJP president J P Nadda on Monday said that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Nadda said he has isolated himself on the advise of doctors and urged those who came in his contact recently to get themselves tested for the virus.

He underwent the test after having some symptoms for the disease and added that he has been feeling alright.

India has been seeing a surge in the number of infections as the highly transmissible Omicron variant of the virus fuels the spread.

India: Advanced version of BrahMos missile test-fired

New Delhi, Jan 11 (PTI) India on Tuesday successfully test-fired a naval variant of the advanced supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from a stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said the missile hit the designated target "precisely".

"Advanced sea to sea variant of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise missile was tested from INS Visakhapatnam today. Missile hit the designated target ship precisely," the DRDO tweeted.
