China calls on US to revoke trade agreement with Taiwan

11 August 2023; AA: Expressing strong opposition to “official interaction of any form” between the US and Taiwan, China on Friday called on Washington to revoke a bilateral trade agreement with Taipei.

“The US move violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, contravenes the US’s own commitment of maintaining only unofficial relations with Taiwan,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

China offers deep condolences over train accident in Pakistan

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (APP): China has offered deep condolences for those who died in the train accident in Pakistan and offered condolences to the victims’ families as well as sympathy to the injured.

“We extend our deep condolences for the victims and sympathies to their families and those who have been injured,” a Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson said in a statement issued here.

A passenger train derailed near Nawabshah district in Sindh province on August 6, killing at least 30 people and injuring more than 100.

Japan Marked 78th Anniversary Of Atomic Bombing Of Nagasaki

TOKYO, Aug 10 (NNN-NHK) – Japan marked the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing of its western city of Nagasaki yesterday, with the city mayor calling on world leaders to stop relying on nuclear deterrence and move steadily towards abolishing nuclear weapons.

This year’s memorial ceremony was significantly scaled down, due to severe tropical storm Khanun approaching the region. The ceremony at the Nagasaki Dejima Messe conference centre was the first since 1963, to take place indoors, rather than at the city’s Peace Park, close to the hypocentre, where the bomb detonated.

5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Jolted Off Eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Aug 10 (NNN-ANTARA) – A 5.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s eastern province of Maluku today, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The agency reported the quake happened at 09:00 a.m. Jakarta time (0200 GMT), with its epicentre being 131 km south-west of Maluku Tenggara (South-east of Maluku) district, and at a depth of 154 km under the seabed.

The earthquake did not have the potential to trigger giant waves, the agency said.

China sends ships and fighter jets toward Taiwan in new show of force

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China sent navy ships and a large group of fighter jets toward Taiwan, continuing its military pressure on the island, Taiwan’s defense ministry said Thursday.

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has regularly sent flights toward the island in reaction to the island’s political activities. In the past year, it has also sent navy vessels as well as drones to circle the waters near the island.

North Korean leader Kim calls for his military to sharpen war plans as his rivals prepare drills

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his military to sharpen its war plans and signed off on expanding combat operations of frontline units, state media said Thursday, as the United States and South Korea prepare for a large-scale combined military exercise.

Khanun slams into South Korea, toppling trees and ripping off roofs

BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — A strong tropical storm slammed into South Korea’s southern coastal regions Thursday, bringing intense rains and winds that toppled trees, ripped off roofs and turned roads into chocolate-colored rivers as it slowly plowed north toward major urban centers near the capital.

There were no immediate reports of storm-related deaths or injuries as of 11 a.m., according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. More than 10,000 people, mostly in southern coastal areas, were forced to evacuate from their homes and the number was expected to grow.

Two Dead, Four Injured In S. Korea’s Building Floor Collapse

SEOUL, Aug 9 (NNN-YONHAP) – Two men were confirmed dead and four others were injured, as the top floor of a building under construction in South Korea collapsed today.

The ninth floor of the nine-story building under construction, in Anseong, some 60 km south-east of Seoul, collapsed onto the eighth floor at about 11:49 a.m. local time (0249 GMT).

The accident left two Vietnamese workers buried and four others wounded.

The Vietnamese men were rescued in cardiac arrest before being taken to a hospital, but they were confirmed dead later.

Taiwan reports second large-scale China air force incursion this week

TAIPEI, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Ten Chinese air force aircraft entered Taiwan's air defence zone on Wednesday accompanying five Chinese warships engaged in "combat readiness" patrols, the island's defence ministry said, the second such incursion this week.

Taiwan, which China claims as its territory, has repeatedly complained of Chinese military activity near it over the past three years, as Beijing steps up pressure to try to force the island to accept its sovereignty.
