China reports 51 new coronavirus cases, mostly in Wuhan

Beijing, May 25 (PTI) China has reported 51 new coronavirus cases including 40 asymptomatic infections, majority of them in the contagion's first epicentre Wuhan, where over six million tests have been conducted in the last 10 days, health officials said on Monday.

The country's National Health Commission (NHC) said that 11 new imported cases were reported on Sunday.

Japan lifts coronavirus emergency in all remaining areas

Tokyo, May 25 (AP/PTI) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe lifted a coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and four other remaining areas on Monday, ending the restrictions nationwide.

Experts on a government-commissioned panel approved the lifting of the emergency in Tokyo, neighbouring Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, and in Hokkaido to the north, which had remained under the emergency declaration after it was removed in most of Japan earlier this month.

Hong Kong and Beijing officials defend security laws, citing threat of terrorism

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China’s foreign ministry office in Hong Kong and the city’s security chief on Monday defended proposed national security laws by describing some acts in mass pro-democracy protests last year as terrorism.

Several government departments issued statements in defence of the proposal after the biggest protest in the city since the coronavirus lockdown on Sunday.

Ludicrous lawsuits against China over COVID-19 totally groundless: FM

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The frivolous lawsuits against China over COVID-19 are shoddy ones, as they have zero basis in fact, law or international precedence, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday.

Wang made the remarks at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual national legislative session.

COVID-19 has caught the whole world by surprise and China is a victim like other countries, he said.

China firmly opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan: spokesperson

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday strongly urged the U.S. to immediately stop arms sales to Taiwan and cease military contacts with the island, to avoid further damages to the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

Wu Qian, a spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in an address on the U.S. State Department's approval of a plan to sell weapons worth 180 million U.S. dollars to Taiwan.

Chinese mainland reports no new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese health authority said Monday that no new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland on Sunday.

Eleven imported cases were reported, including 10 in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Sichuan Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

No new suspected cases and no deaths related to the disease were reported, according to the commission.

Cambodia supports China's draft decision on HK national security legislation: spokesman

PHNOM PENH, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia supports China's draft decision on establishing and improving the legal system and enforcement mechanisms for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to safeguard national security, Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong has said.

"Cambodia consistently adheres to the one-China policy and considers affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as the internal affairs of the People's Republic of China," he told Xinhua on Saturday.

Asian shares climb, Tokyo gains on hopes for reopening

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares are mostly higher, with Tokyo stocks gaining on expectations that a pandemic state of emergency will be lifted for all of Japan.

But shares fell in Hong Kong on Monday after police used tear gas to quell weekend protests over a proposed national security bill for the former British colony.

U.S. markets will be closed for Memorial Day.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 added 1.5% in morning trading to 20,682.78. South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.6% to 1,981.92. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.4% to 5,572.30.

Russian-Chinese anti-coronavirus cooperation will enhance ties - Wang Yi

BEIJING, May 24. /TASS/: Russian-Chinese cooperation in the anti-coronavirus fight will help create an impetus for boosting bilateral ties, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press conference on the sidelines of the 3rd session of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) on Sunday.

"No doubt, cooperation between the two countries in combating the virus will give a powerful impetus for enhancing bilateral cooperation between Russia and China. China is working with Russia in order to turn the crisis into an opportunity," Wang Yi said.

China says virus pushing US ties to brink of 'Cold War'

24 May 2020; AFP: China said Sunday that relations with the United States were "on the brink of a new Cold War", fuelled in part by tensions over the coronavirus pandemic, as Muslims around the world celebrated a muted end to the holy month of Ramadan.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Washington had been infected by a "political virus" compelling figures there to continually attack China, but offered an olive branch by saying the country would be open to an international effort to find the coronavirus source.
