India: HC rejects plea against puja in Gyanvapi's cellar, calls govt's 1993 action 'illegal'

PRAYAGRAJ: Hindu prayers will continue in the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, the Allahabad High Court said on Monday while dismissing a plea that had challenged the district court's order to this effect.

The court observed that the Uttar Pradesh government's 1993 action of stopping worship rituals inside "Vyas Tehkhana" located at the southern cellar of the Gyanvapi was "illegal".

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal said that the worship rituals were stopped by "illegal action of state without there being any order in writing".
