India: UP woman raped by BJP MLA hit by truck; lawyer, aunty dead

Kuldip Singh Sengar

Rae Bareli: An Unnao woman who accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar of raping her was critically injured on Sunday when her car was hit by a truck in Rae Bareli. The victim was accompanied by her aunt and lawyer Mahendra Singh, both of whom died in the accident.

The woman was on her way to meet her uncle Mahesh Singh, who is in Rae Bareli jail, when a truck collided head-on with their car. Two security personnel provided to the rape survivor were not present at the time of the accident.

The woman was raped by the BJP MLA at his residence in June 2017. Her father was booked by the police for illegal possession of firearms and put in jail in April 2018 after her family filed a case against the BJP MLA, and her uncle was slapped with 5 criminal cases.

According to Hindustan Times, the following day, her father was allegedly assaulted by Sengar’s brother and his accomplices in police custody, leading to fatal injuries. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe indicted the MLA and several people connected to him of attempts to frame the survivor’s family in order to pressure her to drop the case.

Sengar is an influential leader in the Bangarmau constituency, and the family battled for a year before he was named in a police case for the rape.

The woman, a teenager then, attempted self-immolation in front of the chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence on April 8 alleging inaction on the part of police in filing a case against the BJP member.

Sengar has been in prison since outrage over the case grew and federal investigators stepped in.

A witness in the assault, Mohammed Yunus, died a few months later.

BJP’s political rivals called for a federal investigation, saying the crash could be a murder attempt. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said the incident “could be a murder attempt”.

The road mishap is unfortunate. The opposition is smelling rat. We wish to assure our friends in opposition to not get excited and engage in politics,” UP BJP leader Chandramohan was reported saying by Hindustan Times.
