BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh announces resignation; may join Congress

BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh from Maharashtra has resigned from the state legislative assembly and from the primary membership of the party.

He is meeting Congress party president Rahul Gandhi, and may join the party.

Deshmukh accused the BJP-led state government of being ‘anti-farmer’ and indulging in divisive vote bank politics.

“The situation of farmers and the youth has worsened in the last four years but the government is indulged only in the politics of vote bank for winning elections and dividing the nation,” PTI quoted him as saying.

“As the BJP has been ignoring the people of India, I am tendering my resignation as an MLA and a member of the BJP,” he added.

According to The Indian Express, “Deshmukh, who represents Katol constituency in Nagpur district, has been a dissenting voice within BJP from some time”.

Deshmukh is a staunch supporter of a separate Vidarbha state and has been demanding that Vidarbha is carved out from Maharashtra.
