WASHINGTON, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah here on Monday over Yemen and regional issues.
Pompeo and his Omani counterpart discussed the recent agreement between the government and Southern Transition Council (STC) of Yemen, which was facilitated by Saudi Arabia, U.S. State Department said in a statement.
They agreed that only a political solution would bring an end to the conflict and ensure peace, prosperity and security in Yemen, according to the statement.
The two top diplomats also discussed the importance of unity within the Gulf Cooperation Council, a political and economic alliance of six countries in the Middle East, to advancing prosperity, security and stability in the region.
In early November, Yemen's internationally-recognized government signed a power-sharing deal with the STC in the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
The STC is considered as a significant part of the Saudi-led Arab coalition to fight Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen.
The deal stipulates that a new power-sharing government will operate from the southern port city of Aden, the country's interim capital, and fulfill all its tasks in serving the people from there.
The impoverished Arab country has been locked in a civil war since late 2014, when the Houthis overran much of the country and seized all northern areas including the capital Sanaa.
