Kanpur: If on the one hand there are existing old and weak buildings in the city's corporation limits, on another hand denizens are not free from the waterlogging crisis here.
According to the available municipal records, there are as many as 641 old and weak buildings in the city areas. A total of 312 such buildings are standing in zone one of the municipal areas at present. As many as 500 applications have been submitted for the dismantling of old and weak buildings to the Nagar Nigam in five days.
The notice to vacate dilapidated houses within 15 days has been served to owners. Only undisputed structures will be dismantled, said K Singh, chief engineer of the KMC. In the meantime, the Nagar Ayukt A Tripathi has directed the owners of dilapidated houses to vacate and settle at safer space. It would be better if they should dismantle such buildings on their own convenience.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that a huge sum of Rs 6 crore was spent in the cleaning of nullahs by the Nagar Nigam but the crisis of waterlogging did not wholly finish. In the heavy rains that occurred during the past several days, there were formed waterlogged areas where the dirty water entered into the residential houses. The level of waterlogging was measured up to about six feet.
In view of these extremely grave situations, the Nagar Ayukt A Tripathi instructed three additional municipal commissioners to conduct a thorough enquiry into the nullahs cleaning work. They were told to understand the exact reasons behind the overflowing of the nullahs.
Unauthorised occupancy over Sisamau Nullah and Rafaka Nullah was not removed despite Mayor's strict instructions. This causes hindrance in the entire cleaning of nullahs. Likewise, the nullah cleaning work from Guba Garden Talab to Panki Kalyanpur and further from Sahab Nagar to Bagia Crossing was not properly done, as was said.
Despite all these grim situations, the Nagar Nigam laid down an electricity line between Yashoda Nagar bypass and Transport Nagar. A total of 124 electricity poles were erected thereby lighting the whole area with street lights.
