Congress to oppose ‘triple-talaq’ bill in Rajya Sabha

AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said that the Congress party will not let the passage of the triple talaq bill in its present form in the Rajya Sabha.

According the PTI report, the bill will be moved by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in Rajya Sabha on Monday.

A number of opposition parties opposed the bill when it was debated in the lower house on Thursday. 10 opposition parties had come out openly against it.

Oppsing parties are united against criminalisation of a civil wrong in the bill and want it removed.

According to The Indian Express, “the Congress had accused the NDA government of getting the triple talaq bill passed in haste in the Lok Sabha keeping in mind the 2019 general elections.”

Opposition, had been demanding that the bill be referred to a ‘joint select committee’.

 “…The bill will not help empower the women”, Venugopal said while claiming there was no confusion in the Congress-led UPA or party-led UDF in Kerala regarding the bill, reported The Indian Express.
