BEIRUT, Dec 19 (NNN-NNA) – Lebanon signed, yesterday, a cooperation agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP), to boost the country’s agriculture sector.

Lebanese Agriculture Minister, Abbas Mortada, said, only the agriculture sector is capable of guaranteeing food security for Lebanon while securing access to food at reasonable prices, amid the current economic crisis.

“The agreement with WFP is not restricted to offering financial and food support, but it also includes developing the infrastructure of the sector,” he said, while highlighting the role of cooperatives in spreading information and distributing support to farmers.

Meanwhile, Abdallah Al-Wardat, the country director and representative of WFP in Lebanon, said, the programme offers financial and food support to more than one million Syrian refugees and the most vulnerable people in Lebanon.

“It can also develop rural areas in cooperation with the agriculture ministry,” he said.
