ANKARA, Dec 29 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkish security forces killed 20 members of the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), in northern Syria, as they were preparing to carry out an attack on Turkey’s operation zone, Turkey’s Defence Ministry, said.

“Our commandos continue to neutralise PKK/YPG terrorists that are trying to infiltrate the Operation Peace Spring area. Another 20 PKK/YPG terrorists, who attempted to infiltrate from the south, to attack the region, were neutralised by the successful intervention of our commandos,” the ministry tweeted.

The incident comes one day after the Turkish Defence Ministry said, its security forces killed 15 YPG members as they were preparing to carry out an attack into Operation Peace Spring zone on Sunday.

Turkey sees the YPG group as the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The Turkish army launched Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016, Operation Olive Branch in 2018, Operation Peace Spring in 2019, and Operation Spring Shield in 2020 in northern Syria, in order to create a YPG-free zone along its border within Syria.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States and the EU, has been rebelling against the Turkish government for over 30 years, which has claimed the lives of more than 40,000 people.
