BAGHDAD, May 9 (NNN-NINA) – An unidentified drone attacked, yesterday, a military airbase housing U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, the Iraqi and U.S. military said.
“A booby-trapped drone went down at about 2:30 local time (23:30 GMT on Friday) at Ayn al-Asad Air Base in Anbar Province, without casualties,” the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said.
According to an initial report, tweeted by Wayne Marotto, spokesman of the international coalition forces in Iraq, the airbase was attacked this morning at 2:20 a.m. local time, by an unmanned aerial surveillance system.
He said that there were no reports of injuries in the attack, which damaged a hangar, stressing that the attack is under investigation.
Ayn al-Asad Air Base, formerly known as al-Qadisiyah, is located some 190 km northwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. The Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops across Iraq and the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.
