India: Earnings more meaningful than festival for wagers

Kanpur: Bakrid is an occasion for the daily earners to make money as there is a trend among the butchers to go to other cities for earning during the three-day festival.

Their demand suddenly increases during the festival as every person seeks help from them.

A group of about twenty or more butchers arrived in the city to conduct the act of slaughtering the goats. What they looked for was earning some money by their specialised act.

They arrive in a group and spread at the places where they are required to cutting the mutton into pieces. They perform the whole act from skinning off to making the pieces.

One group coming from about two hundred Kilometres from the city stayed here for three days. They said they have been coming here for the past several years.

They eye on getting a sufficient number of male goats so that their wages could increase. Resenting upon securing lesser numbers one among them disclosed that this year there remained a decline. If they had got twenty-one goats last year the total came down to seventeen presently.

When people were approached to comment upon the decline, they maintained it was mainly due to poor earnings. It was also hinted that the goats were sold at higher rates this year.

Despite the reality, there was continued the sacrifice of goats on all the days. Commonly, everyone likes to stay at home for the celebration of the yearly festival but they leave their home for reaping money.
