Kanpur: The station controller-cum-train operators are being trained at COET, a prominent metro simulator training centre, in Lucknow.
It is equipped with all the applicable and updated technical gadgets. This thorough training requires a practice of train operation for 400 Kms on a simulator.
This training will help them procure a 'Competency Certificate.'
This training is important to conduct the trial runs of the elevated Priority Corridor, running from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel, scheduled for November 2021.
A simulator is the replica model of the actual driver's cabin in a metro, where the trainee can undergo a real-time experience of operating a train.
Reportedly, as many as 4 metro rail corporations are offering this facility. They are: UP Metro in Lucknow, Delhi Metro, Hyderabad Metro and Namma Metro in Bengaluru.
According to the practice schedule, the trainees will initially go through classroom training where they will be taught about simulators. They will definitely be acquainted with the desktop simulators in the first phase itself. Here, the screen will be like that of the driving cab with all the controller buttons and a lever.
During the second stage, drivers will work with the '5D Motion Simulator' a replica of the driver's cabin of a metro train.
The screen here shows the city buildings, roads and passengers, to ensure adaptability to the real environment.
In this phase, the drivers will also be trained for proper opening and closing of the metro doors.
Training to tackle emergency and technical hiccups, fires and door complications will also be given to the trainees.
Drivers will be examined about the Passenger Emergency Intercom in the train enabling direct instructions from the operator to the public, in unfavourable circumstances.
They shall also be trained as to how to speak on the intercom to stave off confusion during an emergency.
The simulator at the centre is equipped with the facility of a CCTV, that helps the monitoring committee to verify and assess the driver's performance.
After training on simulators, the trainees will embark on practice on the test track of the depot.
As regards the ongoing work of Kanpur Metro, about 80% has been finished and the trial runs are set to begin in about three months' time.
The Metro Authority is presently occupied with finalising the fine-detailing of the project, including civil and electrical work at the stations and tracks.
The metro operator training sets its pace in Lucknow, and the metro rakes are being manufactured in Gujarat. If all timelines are met, the Kanpur Metro will be tasked by this year's end or January 2022.
