Kuwait encourages citizens to leave UK over Omicron surge

Corona in UK

03 Jan 2022; MEMO: The Kuwaiti embassy in the United Kingdom has encouraged its citizens to leave the country due to a "significant and unprecedented" increase in Omicron cases there, Kuwait's state news agency, KUNA reported on Sunday.

The embassy warned in a statement that the rising figures may lead to the imposition of new restrictions including a national lockdown and irregular air traffic.

The daily number of new COVID-19 infections across the UK rose to a record 189,846 on Friday, far higher than during previous peaks, Reuters reported.

The Gulf country's embassies in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain have also encouraged citizens to return to Kuwait due to a "significant and unprecedented" increase in Omicron cases.

Earlier on Saturday, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked its nationals wishing to travel abroad to postpone their plans due to the growing number of COVID-19 infections worldwide.
