Warring factions in Sudan agree to temporary ceasefire, say US-Saudi mediators

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sudan’s warring factions have agreed to a new short-term ceasefire, U.S. and Saudi mediators announced on Saturday, after several previous attempts to broker a truce that holds have failed.

Meeting in the Saudi port city of Jeddah, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces signed off on a seven-day ceasefire that is due to take effect on Monday 9:45 p.m. local time in Sudan, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia said in a joint statement. The ceasefire could be extended if both sides agree.

German police investigate possible poisoning of two Russian exiles

BERLIN, May 21 (Reuters) - German police said they are investigating the possible poisoning of two Russian exiles who attended a conference in Berlin at the end of April, organised by Russian Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Berlin police told Reuters "a file had been opened" after German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, citing Russian investigative media group Agentstvo, said two women reported symptoms that suggested possible poisoning.

Police gave no further details, citing ongoing investigations.

Germany: At least two Ukrainians could be behind Nord Stream blasts — newspaper

BERLIN, May 21. /TASS/: At least two Ukrainians could be behind the explosions at the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, Germanys’ Suddeutsche Zeitung daily said on Sunday.

According to a probe conducted by the daily and other German and European media, several months ago Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office found the Feeria Lwowa travel agency in Poland, which chartered the Andromeda yacht used by the suspects of the Nord Stream blasts to reach the site.

Hezbollah stages wargames for media, asserts readiness to confront Israel

AARAMTA, Lebanon (AP) — Lebanese militant group Hezbollah put on a show of force Sunday, extending a rare media invitation to one of its training sites in southern Lebanon, where its forces staged a simulated military exercise.

Masked fighters jumped through flaming hoops, fired from the backs of motorcycles, and blew up Israeli flags posted in the hills above and a wall simulating the one at the border between Lebanon and Israel.

Stadium stampede leaves 9 dead in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, May 20 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at the Cuscatlan Stadium here in the Salvadoran capital on Saturday, said the National Civil Police of the Central American country.

The incident occurred when the Salvadoran league's quarter-final game was being played between the popular teams of Alianza and FAS.

According to Salvadoran media, although the stadium was full, fans pushed from outside, resulting in a stampede that pressured several people against the fences of the stadium.

Sudan's Arab Summit representative: 'We will pardon the rebels if they put down their arms'

20 May 2023; MEMO: The representative of Sudan at the Arab Summit in Saudi Arabia announced on Friday: "If the forces (Rapid Support Forces) that rebelled against peace lay down their arms, we will pardon them."

During a speech before the Arab Summit in Jeddah, the representative of Sudan Dafa-Allah Al-Haj Yousef added: "We stress that if the rebel forces lay down their arms, we will pardon them. We are not warmongers, but they forced this on us."

Heavy showers expected to continue over SW Sri Lanka

Philippine Troops Killed Five Suspected Rebels In Clashes

MANILA, May 21 (NNN-PNA) – Philippine troops killed five suspected rebels, in a series of clashes, in the central Philippines yesterday, a military spokesperson said.

Lieutenant Colonel Israel Galorio of the Visayas Command said, the first fighting broke out around 5.00 a.m. local time yesterday, followed by two more clashes in Negros Occidental province, resulting in the death of five New People’s Army (NPA) members.

Canada: Alberta wildfire fighters hope rain, cooling bring relief

May 21 (Reuters) - Alberta authorities hope cooler temperatures and showers forecast for the coming week will help firefighters battling blazes in the oil-rich Canadian province, although storms could complicate efforts.

Amid hot, dry conditions, forecasters were tracking a front likely to move into the province on Sunday that should bring much-needed relief, including humidity and even rain, Christie Tucker, information unit manager at Alberta Wildfire, said at a Saturday briefing.
