Egypt, Sudan to establish joint food company

23 Apr 2021; MEMO: Egypt and Sudan have signed a memorandum of understanding to set up a joint company for agricultural and livestock production, the Ministry of Supply in Cairo announced yesterday, Reuters has reported.

The ministry said that the company would have a "large" capital base and would "increase economic cooperation and trade between the two countries."

Leading rights groups urge US not to waive human rights conditions on aid to Egypt

 23 Apr 2021; MEMO: A coalition of 14 of the leading human rights groups and NGOs, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken not to waive human rights conditions on aid to Egypt. The appeal has been made in a letter sent to Blinken as the Biden administration considers a national security waiver to continue aid payments despite Cairo's appalling human rights record.

Russia to resume all flights to Egypt: statement

CAIRO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Russia will resume all the flights to Egypt's airports, including the ones to Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada after more than five-year suspension to the two seaside cities, the Egyptian presidency office said in a statement on Friday.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin "has welcomed the move that constitutes a momentum for promoting the bilateral ties," according to the statement.

Egypt buys 20m doses of China covid vaccine

20 Apr 2021; MEMO: Egypt has agreed to purchase 20 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine produced by China's Sinopharm and expects to receive a batch of 500,000 shots this month, Reuters reported its Ministry of Health said today.

The agreement boosts vaccination efforts in Egypt, which has a population of 101 million and has so far received a total of just over 1.5 million doses of Sinopharm and of the AstraZeneca shot.

Egypt fires top railway official after deadly train crashes

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s transportation minister on Tuesday said he sacked the country’s top railway official, following three train accidents in less than a month that left more than 40 people dead and over 350 injured.

The firing of Ashraf Raslan was part of an attempt to overhaul the rundown railway system’s leadership amid public outcry over repeated train crashes.

Raslan, who headed the railway authority since July 2018, was replaced by Mustafa Abuel-Makarm, Transportation Minister Kamal el-Wazir said in a statement.

Egypt says 11 killed in train crash north of Cairo

CAIRO (AP) — A passenger train derailed Sunday north of Cairo, killing at least 11 people, Egyptian authorities said. It was the latest of several rail accidents to hit the country in recent years.

Four train wagons ran off the railway at the city of Banha in Qalyubia province, just outside Cairo, the railway authority said in a statement. Videos on social media showed wagons overturned and passengers escaping to safety along the railway.

The train was travelling to the Nile Delta city of Mansoura from the Egyptian capital, the statement said.

Egypt to use Cairo's int'l exhibition center for mass COVID-19 vaccination: minister

CAIRO, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed said on Wednesday that the government is preparing the vast Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Centre for mass COVID-19 vaccination, noting the center can accommodate 10,000 citizens daily.

In a virtual cabinet meeting, Zayed explained that 75 clinics are currently being prepared at the spacious venue, according to a cabinet statement.

She pointed out that the center has a yard with an area of 1,500 square meters where citizens can wait, "which ensures social distancing."
