Arab FMs renew Aboul-Gheit's term as Arab League chief

CAIRO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Arab foreign ministers agreed on Wednesday to renew the Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit's five-year term.

Egyptian state TV announced the Arab foreign ministers unanimously agreed to Egypt's request to renew Aboul-Gheit's mandate as the pan-Arab organization's secretary general for the second term, during the 155th ordinary session of the AL Council.

Egypt, Sudan voice concern over possible 2nd phase filling of Ethiopia's Nile dam

CAIRO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Sudanese counterpart Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi stressed on Tuesday that Ethiopia's possible second phase filling of the Nile dam unilaterally would pose a direct threat to water security of Egypt and Sudan.

The remarks came during the two ministers meeting in Egypt's capital Cairo, where the two diplomats tackled a number of issues of common interest, according to a joint press statement released after the meeting.

Egypt: Human rights defender Ezzat Ghoneim completes 3 years in pretrial detention

02 Mar 2021; MEMO: Lawyer and human rights defender Ezzat Ghoneim has just completed three years in pretrial detention in Egypt.

Yesterday, the Egyptian Network for Human Rights (ENHR) said that Ezzat had been transferred between police stations and various other places of detention with no legal justification or judicial ruling for his detention.

Arab League backs Saudi Arabia's rejection of U.S. report on Khashoggi killing

CAIRO, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit expressed on Saturday support for Saudi Arabia's rejection of a recent U.S. intelligence report on the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

"Saudi judicial authorities are the only ones in charge of holding those involved in Khashoggi case accountable," the AL chief said in a statement.

Egypt Approves Russia’s Sputnik V Vaccine For Emergency Use

CAIRO, Feb 25 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), approved Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in Egypt, the country’s drug regulator said in a statement yesterday.

Mahmoud Yassin, head of EDA’s Central Administration for Biological and Innovative Products, said that, the Russian vaccine was approved, after passing assessment tests at the authority’s labs, according to the statement.

Egypt has previously approved China’s Sinopharm and Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use.

Egypt, U.S. Discuss Military, Security, Anti-Terror Cooperation

CAIRO, Feb 23 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and visiting Commander of U.S. Central Command, Kenneth McKenzie, discussed yesterday, ways to strengthen cooperation in the military, security and anti-terrorism fields.

During a meeting in Cairo, Sisi and McKenzie also discussed joint military training programmes and the exchange of experience, presidential spokesman, Bassam Rady, said, in a statement.

Egypt, Spain hold joint naval exercise in Red Sea

CAIRO, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian and Spanish naval forces held joint military drills in the Red Sea, Egypt's armed forces said in a statement on Saturday.

The joint exercise is the second in recent days, after the two navies held similar drills on Feb. 14 also in the Red Sea.

The training involved various activities, including carrying out sailing formations, surveillance of suspected ships, night transportation, helicopter landing on helidecks of marine units and more, according to the statement.

Egypt opens up to oil, gas bids for 24 exploration blocks

19 Feb 2021; MEMO: Egypt is launching a global round of bids for oil and gas exploration and production across 24 blocks, the Petroleum Ministry announced yesterday.

In the official statement, the ministry said that the blocks were located in nine areas in the Mediterranean Sea, 12 in the Western Desert and three in the Gulf of Suez.
