Egypt: minister’s call for new media agenda exposes rift with government

19 Oct 2020; MEMO: Egypt’s Minister for Information Affairs called on Saturday for journalists and the media to shift their agenda in line with the “interests” of the Egyptian people, Al-Watan Voice has reported.

Osama Haikal said that Egyptians under 35 years old – 60 to 65 per cent of the population – do not read newspapers or watch TV so it is important for journalists to reflect this in their output. His comments provoked a sharp backlash from journalists who called on the minister to resign.

Egypt, Spain FMs Discuss Regional Issues, Sign MOU For Political Consultation

CAIRO, Oct 18 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, held talks yesterday, with his Spanish counterpart, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, on bilateral relations and regional issues, and signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), for political consultation.

In a later, news conference, the two ministers said that, their talks addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Syrian and the Libyan crises, and other regional issues of mutual concern.

Egyptian, South African Leaders Discuss Ethiopia’s Nile Dam

CAIRO, Oct 15 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian President, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, received, yesterday, a phone call from his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, during which they discussed the Ethiopian grand hydropower dam, built on the Nile River, said the Egyptian presidency.

Sisi reiterated Egypt’s stance regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which seeks to reach “a binding and comprehensive legal agreement” on the rules of filling and operating the dam, through tripartite negotiations with Ethiopia and Sudan.

Egypt hosts UN-brokered Libyan peace talks

CAIRO, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Egypt hosted on Sunday a new round of negotiations between Libya's two rival administrations represented in members of Libya's Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the High Council of State.

During the talks, sponsored by the United Nations, Director of Egypt's General Intelligence Service Abbas Kamel reiterated Egypt's commitment to the UN-led efforts for a peaceful settlement in Libya, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

Egypt, Russia to hold joint exercises in Black Sea soon — TV

CAIRO, October 11. /TASS/: The navies of Egypt and Russia are preparing to hold joint exercises in the Black Sea in the near future, the Al Arabiya TV channel reported on Saturday.

An Egyptian military expert, Maj. Gen. Gamal Mazlum told TASS that it would be the first-ever Russian-Egyptian naval exercise.

"Egyptian forces will arrive to the Black Sea via the international transit straits of Bosphorus and Dardanelles," he said. "In the course of the maneuvers, the sides will practice joint combat tasks according to advanced warfighting tactics."

Russia, Egypt navies to hold joint drills in Black Sea

11 Oct 2020; MEMO: The Russian and Egyptian Navies are set to hold joint military drills in the waters of the Black Sea before the end of this year, a press release announced on Thursday.

Delegations of the Russian and Egyptians Navies held meetings in the Russian city of Novorossiysk, and agreed on arrangements for the drills.

Arab League crisis continues as 6th member refuses to take up presidency

CAIRO, Oct 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Arab League was targeted by growing criticism on Arab social media after six countries refused to chair the rotating presidency of the organization.

On Tuesday, Libya declined to take the presidency after Palestine relinquished its right to preside. Libya joined Qatar, the Comoros, Kuwait and Lebanon in refusing the chair.

So far, no statement has been issued by the Arab League about the dilemma.

United Nations denounces execution of 15 oppositionists in Egypt

07 Oct 2020; MEMO: The United Nations (UN) has revealed that some of the 15 oppositionists executed by the Egyptian authorities on charges of terrorism, violence and incitement to murder were tortured and did not receive fair trials.

This came in a statement on Wednesday by Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Liz Throssell to Anadolu Agency.

Egypt FM, UN Special Envoy Discuss Syria Crisis

CAIRO, Oct 5 (NNN-MENA) – Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, received on Sunday, a phone call from UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, during which they discussed the developments of the Syrian crisis, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

“The call touched on ways to advance the political settlement of the Syrian crisis,” said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Ahmed Hafez, in a statement.
