Delhi violence: Court sends Jamia student to 3-day police custody, JCC condems arrest

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) A Delhi court has sent a student of Jamia Milia Islamia, arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to incite communal riots in northeast Delhi, to three days police custody, said a lawyer.

Meeran Haider (35), a PhD student at Jamia, is the president of RJD youth wing's Delhi unit.

India: Convey scientific facts on coronavirus: Left parties to Modi

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to people to light candles on April 5 and display India's collective resolve to defeat COVID-19, Left parties asked the government on Friday to focus on "scientific measures" to fight the disease.

Modi urged people on Friday to switch off the lights of their homes and light candles, lamps or turn on the flashlights of their mobile phones for nine minutes at 9 pm on Sunday to "end the darkness" of coronavirus.

India: Liquor shop looted in Delhi amid lockdown

New Delhi, Apr 4 (PTI) Amid the nationwide lockdown, some unidentified persons broke into a wine shop here and decamped with liquor bottles, police said on Saturday.

During patrolling on Saturday morning, police found that the shutter of a wine shop at the Roshnara Road in north Delhi was broken.

"The shutter of the wine shop had been forcibly pulled up and some liquor bottles and crates were stolen," a senior police officer said.

A case under relevant sections of the IPC was registered at the Sabzi Mandi police station, he added.

India: No democracy is fighting pandemic by gagging its media: Editors Guild

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) The Editors Guild of India has said it is "deeply perturbed" over the government blaming the media in the Supreme Court for causing panic among migrant workers, leading to their exodus in the wake of the lockdown, and asserted that such actions could obstruct the process of dissemination of news.

In a strongly-worded statement, the Guild said that blaming the media at this juncture can only undermine the current work being done by it under trying circumstances.

India: Group of Ministers reviews overall situation across country

New Delhi, Apr 3 (PTI) As the country battles a sudden surge in coronavirus cases, the government on Friday carried out a detailed review of the overall healthcare delivery system as well as situation arising out of the 21-day nation-wide lockdown, officials said.

The review was conducted by a Group of Ministers headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and comprising several key members of the Union Cabinet including Home Home Minister Amit Shah, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.

India: Over 1,300 people booked for curfew violations

Mumbai, Apr 2 (PTI) The Mumbai Police has registered 709 offences against as many as 1,364 people for violating prohibitory orders during the coronavirus lockdown in the last 13 days, an official said on Thursday.

The Maharashtra government has invoked section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the state is under lockdown in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The police have registered around 709 offences against 1,364 people under section 188 (disobeying an order issued by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code since March 20, the official said.

India: SC seeks Centre's stand on plea for WHO-graded protective gears to medical staffs

New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought to know from the Centre its stand on a plea that has highlighted the urgent need to provide WHO-graded protective gear to doctors, nurses and medical staff who are treating coronavirus patients across the country.

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah that heard the matter through video-conferencing, asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to examine the plea and place before the court the Centre's stand with regard to the issues highlighted in the petition.

India: PM Cares Fund unnecessary: CPIM

New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) CPI(M) has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the creation of the PM Cares Fund for those affected by coronavirus and said a similar fund was set up after the Pulwama attack and there has been no transparency about it.

The Polit Bureau said in a statement that a separate fund for the COVID-19 pandemic was unnecessary.

India: Lockdown improves health of river Ganga, suitable for bathing at many poins

New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) The health of Ganga River has seen significant improvement since enforcement of the nationwide lockdown that has led to reduction in dumping of industrial waste into it, experts have said.

India has been placed under a three-week lockdown since March 24 with its 1.3 billion people instructed to stay home in view of the coronavirus outbreak, which has claimed 50 lives so far and infected over 1,965 people in the country.

India: Don't communalise coronavirus crisis: CPI(M)

New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Thursday said that the coronavirus crisis should not be communalised and slammed both the Tablighi Jamaat as well as state authorities for allowing a mass gathering during the pandemic.

Six people who died in Telangana and one in Jammu and Kashmir had attended the religious congregation in Nizamuddin area here.
