India: Chidambaram's case will be put before CJI to consider for urgent listing: SC

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday said senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's plea challenging the Delhi High Court order dismissing his petition for pre-arrest bail in the INX media case will be put before the CJI to consider for urgent listing.

Justice N V Ramana told senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, that the case will be put before CJI Ranjan Gogoi.

"I am sending it to the Chief Justice of India. He will pass orders," the bench told Sibal.

India: SSP suspends Chowki in-charge for indiscipline

KANPUR: Despite the start of the weekly holiday in the department, the In-charge of Makanpur police post in Billhaur listened to the complainants in easy postures wearing not even the proper uniform on Monday. A video of his odd posture went viral on Twitter which led his suspension on recommendations of the senior officers.

According to a news report, the Chowki Incharge was unmindful of his dress and posture at the time the victims reached his room adjacent to the office.

India: Veteran music composer Khayyam passes away at 92

Mumbai, Aug 19 (PTI) Veteran composer Khayyam, best known for his music in classic films such as 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Kabhi Kabhie', passed away after a prolonged illnesses at a hospital here on Monday.

He was 92.

Mohammed Zahur Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, was admitted to Sujay Hospital in suburban Juhu a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses.

Pakistan Army opens fire at forward posts, villages in Poonch

Jammu, Aug 20 (PTI) The Pakistan Army on Tuesday targeted forward posts and villages along the LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir with mortars and firing from small arms, a defence spokesman said.

The firing from across the border in Krishna Ghati sector started around 1100 hours, drawing response from the Indian Army, the spokesman said.

He said the cross-border firing between the two sides was going on when last reports came in.

India: Pregnant woman killed for dowry in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Aug 20 (PTI) A pregnant woman was allegedly killed by her husband and in-laws at their house here over demand for dowry, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Khatauli town on Monday when Babli was strangled by her husband, Ashu (26), and the in-laws for not fulfilling their demands, Circle Officer Ashish Pratap Singh said.

Babli and Ashu got married five years ago, he said.

Delhi HC to continue hearing PIL against triple talaq law on Oct 18

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Delhi High Court on Monday said it will continue to hear on October 18 a plea challenging the new law criminalising the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar heard brief arguments by the petitioner and then listed the matter for further hearing on October 18. The court made it clear that it was not issuing a notice in the matter.

KANPUR: The district policemen are in a fix as to whether they should leave the police station in 24-hour reserve day leave or not. This one day holiday has started from today. They have been instructed if they are required in an emergency they should be present within 15 minutes. If they were not reaching the police station in the time, a case of indiscipline would be used against them

India: Yediyurappa inducts 17 Ministers in first Cabinet expansion

Bengaluru, Aug 20 (PTI) More than three weeks after he was sworn in as the Chief Minister, B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday expanded his ministry by inducting 17 ministers into his Cabinet.

This is the first Cabinet expansion after he assumed office on July 26 and proved his government's majority on the floor of the Assembly on July 29.

The new Ministers were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Vajubhai Vala at the Raj Bhavan here.

India: Community fridges to feed those in need

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) A new initiative will encourage local communities to take part in solving the pressing issues of food wastage and hunger by installing community fridges across the country.

The campaign, "Happy Fridge", by New Delhi-based NGO Feeding India (FI) will allow anyone to put their excess food at the 500 community fridges installed at residential and commercial spaces.
