India: Cabinet clears fresh triple talaq bill

New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a fresh bill to ban the practice of instant triple talaq, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said.

The bill will be introduced in the Budget session of Parliament which begins on Monday to replace an ordinance issued in February by the previous BJP-led NDA government.

With the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha last month, the previous bill had lapsed as it was pending in Rajya Sabha.

India: HC directive to TN govt on traffic violations

Chennai, Jun 12 (PTI) The Madras High Court Wednesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to issue orders for empowering police officers above sub-inspector rank to impose spot fines and compound offences committed by motorists.

A division bench comprising justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad issued the directive while hearing a petition filed by K K Rajendran, seeking to implement the compulsory helmet rule both for rider and pillion.

It recorded the steps taken by the police and the transport department for violation of the motor vehicle rules

India: Homesexual chops genitals of two men

Chennai, Jun 12 (PTI) A 36-year-old homosexual has been arrested for allegedly chopping off the genitals of two men, one of whom died, police said here Wednesday.

Munusamy, a native of Manamadurai, was arrested following the release of video clips by police which had visuals of him walking under a flyover near Retteri in north Chennai.

Additional commissioner of police R Dhinakaran told reporters here that the man was arrested Tuesday night after the police sifted through footage of 40 CCTV cameras.

India: Parts of Mumbai may face 10-15 pc water cut

Mumbai, Jun 12 (PTI) Parts of Mumbai may face water cut by 10 to 15 per cent till June 14, the local civic body said Wednesday.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said water cut may be imposed after a technical snag was reported Tuesday in the supply system at Bhatsa dam, which supplies water to large parts of the financial capital.

Some media reports had earlier suggested Mumbaikars may face up to 25 per cent water cut till June 14.

India successfully tests scramjet demonstrator aircraft

Balasore (Odisha), Jun 12 (PTI) India successfully launched the indigenously-developed Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) in its maiden test from a base off the Odisha coast on Wednesday.

The HSTDV was successfully test-fired by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Launch Complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on Dr Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal at 11.27 am, DRDO sources said.

India: National anthem stopped midway at BJP-controlled IMC meet

Indore, Jun 12 (PTI) Confusion prevailed at the BJP- controlled Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) when the recital of the national anthem 'Jana gana mana' was abruptly stopped by its members on Wednesday for singing of 'Vande Mataram'.

A video clip of the incident has gone viral on social media here, in which Mayor Malini Gaud, who is also a local BJP MLA, is also visible.

India’s west coast hunkers down as Cyclone Vayu approaches

VERAVAL, India (AP) — Authorities evacuated nearly 300,000 people from India’s western coastline ahead of a very severe cyclone that’s expected to make landfall on Thursday as the year’s second major storm.

The India Meteorological Department says Cyclone Vayu, named after the Hindi word for wind, could possibly just scrape by the western state of Gujarat instead of hitting it head on in the afternoon before returning to the Arabian Sea.

India: First Female President Of UP Bar Council Shot Dead in Agra

Darvesh Yadav, a newly elected President of UP Bar Council was shot dead in Agra Civil Court yesterday evening, reports the IANS.

Yadav was the first woman to be the Chairman of UP Bar Council, who was elected two days back. According to reports, the attacker was Advocate Manish Sharma, who opened three rounds of fire at Yadav, inside the chambers of Advocate Arvind Kumar Mishra within Agra court premises.

India: Restaurant owner beaten for asking money from BJP leader’s son

Maharajganj, 12 June 2019: Owner of a restaurant in Adda Bazaar, was beaten severally by the brother and son of a BJP ex-president of Maharaja gang district.

The owner Phoolchand Madheshia and his family members, including the females, were beaten for asking money for the food duo have eaten at his restaurant.
