Japan: Kishida plans to visit Yoon in South Korea before G-7

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday he is arranging a trip to South Korea for talks with President Yoon Suk Yeol in return for his March visit to Tokyo, aiming to further strengthen their ties before the upcoming Group of Seven summit.

Tokyo and Seoul have been working to repair relations that were strained over wartime history disputes as they deepen three-way security cooperation with Washington in response to growing regional threats from North Korea and China.

Alibaba’s Jack Ma turns up in Japan as college professor

TOKYO (AP) — Jack Ma, a cofounder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, will be a visiting professor at Tokyo College, a research institute run by the prestigious University of Tokyo, the university said Monday.

Ma will carry out research in sustainable agriculture and food production, it said in a statement.

It said that Ma, who also heads his own Jack Ma Foundation, a philanthropic organization, will “share his rich experience and pioneering knowledge on entrepreneurship, corporate management and innovation,” with students and faculty.

Japan to downgrade legal status of COVID-19 on May 8

TOKYO, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Japan on Thursday decided to officially downgrade the legal status of COVID-19 to the same category of seasonal influenza, with the new status coming into effect on May 8.

The move comes as the health ministry endorsed the government's plan to recategorize COVID-19 and downgrade its legal status to the same group as seasonal influenza.

Japan rolls out red carpet for Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

A special chartered VVIP flight (BG1403) of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister and her entourage members landed at the Haneda International Airport, Tokyo at 4.45pm (local time).

State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan TAKEI Shunsuke and Ambassador of Bangladesh to Japan Shahabuddin Ahmed received the Prime Minister at the airport.

Japan: G7 member states support implementation and further expansion of grain deal — statement

TOKYO, April 23. /TASS/: Agriculture ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) member states voiced their resolute support to the implementation, extension, and expansion of the grain deal, according to the ministers’ communique following their meeting in southwestern Japanese city of Miyazaki on April 22-23.

The ministers also expressed the readiness of the G7 to support Ukraine in rebuilding its agricultural infrastructure, including irrigation facilities, food processing and storage facilities, as well as in providing financial support to Ukrainian farmers.

Suspect in Japan PM attack may have had election grudge

TOKYO (AP) — An unemployed 24-year-old man who allegedly threw a pipe bomb at Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wanted to be a politician and believed that he was unfairly blocked from running for Japan’s parliament by an age requirement, according to media reports and social media posts that appeared to be his.

The suspect, Ryuji Kimura, was wrestled to the ground and arrested Saturday at a campaign event in the fishing port of Saikazaki, in the western Japanese city of Wakayama. The explosive, believed to be a pipe bomb, landed near Kishida, who escaped unhurt.

Stock market today: Asia trading mixed ahead of earnings: Japan

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares were trading mixed Wednesday, as investors took a wait-and-see attitude ahead of earnings reports and possible moves by central banks.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped 0.2% in morning trading to 28,590.40. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.1% to 7,370.70. South Korea’s Kospi gained less than 0.1% to 2,573.12. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.6% to 20,521.13. The Shanghai Composite shed 0.3% to 3,383.18.
