MEXICO CITY, Aug 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The families of 40 people who died in a fire at a detention center for undocumented migrants in a Mexican border town in March will receive more than $8 million each, the government said.

According to Mexican authorities, the fire in Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the US city of El Paso, started when a migrant set fire to the mattress in his cell, where he was being held with 67 other men, to protest his possible deportation.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s immigration agency said late Friday it found 491 migrants being held at a compound by the side of a highway east of Mexico City.

All but six of the migrants were from Guatemala; the others are Hondurans.

There were 277 children and adolescents among the migrants, most of whom were traveling with relatives. But there were also 52 unaccompanied minors.

MEXICO CITY, Aug 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) — A “lifeless person” has been found stuck in the floating barrier set up by Texas along the U.S-Mexico border, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  

The agency said authorities from the Texas Department of Public Safety contacted the Mexican consulate in Eagle Pass, Texas, around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday to notify them of the discovery in the floating barrier along the Rio Grande. 

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Dora formed Tuesday off Mexico’s western Pacific coast but will not be a threat to land, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center

Forecasters say that while the storm is expected to strengthen, it is moving generally westward and heading away from land.

The center said Dora was located 275 miles (445 kilometers) southwest of the Pacific coast port of Manzanillo.

The storm had winds of 40 miles per hour (65 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).

MEXICO CITY, July 28 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso on Friday hit its highest level against the dollar since early December 2015, as the greenback lost steam after a slowdown in U.S. inflation bolstered the case for the Federal Reserve to end its interest rate hikes.

The currency, which has been dubbed the "super peso" in some quarters, including by its most prominent cheerleader, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, strengthened by more than 1.3% in morning trading to 16.63 per dollar.

MEXICO CITY, July 22 (NNN-XINHUA) — At least six people were killed and 53 others injured in a collision between a bus and a cargo truck in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, the local Attorney General’s Office said Friday.

The accident occurred at about 1:00 a.m. local time on the La Piedad-Vista Hermosa highway, near the city of Yurecuaro, according to the office.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Two miners were killed when a cable snapped on the bucket used to lower them into a small, primitive coal mine that was operating illegally in northern Mexico.

The failure of the cable sent the bucket plunging down the mine shaft, killing the miners, the Labor Department said late Tuesday. The department said the accident occurred Tuesday at a mine in the northern border state of Coahuila.

MEXICO CITY, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Three police officers were killed and 10 others wounded on Tuesday in an explosives attack in Mexico's western state of Jalisco, said local authorities.

According to local reports, the explosion occurred near a vehicle in which the officers were traveling.

The attack is "an unprecedented act and shows what these organized crime groups are capable of," Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro tweeted.

MEXICO CITY, July 7 (Reuters) - Two workers died and another remained missing after a raging fire broke out early on Friday morning at an offshore platform run by Mexican state oil company Pemex just off the southern edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

In posts on Twitter, Pemex said it had accounted for all other workers and said oil production had taken a major hit from the blaze.

Video circulating on social media showed the massive platform and its tangle of pipelines engulfed in flames as nearby boats sought to douse the fire with hoses.
