Nepali Authorities Alert Mountaineers About Potential Dangers From Tauktae Cyclone

KATHMANDU, May 18 (NNN-XINHUA) – The Nepali Department of Tourism, alerted mountaineers trying to climb different Himalayan mountains in Nepal, about the danger of potential massive snowfalls, sparked by a strong TaukTae cyclonic storm, a department official said.

“We told them to be alert about the potential danger and take precautionary measures,” said Mira Acharya, director at the department that issued climbing permits for mountaineers.

Nepal allows limited flights to China, Qatar amid coronavirus ban

KATHMANDU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Nepali government has decided to allow one flight each week to China and Qatar respectively at a time when international flights have been suspended till the end of this month in efforts to curb the raging coronavirus, government officials said Tuesday.

"There will be a regular commercial flight once a week to China and Qatar," Mani Thapa, minister for water supply and sanitation, told Xinhua Tuesday. "This is basically to ease the supply of medical goods and ease commuting of the stranded people if necessary."

Nepal gets more China-donated oxygen cylinders amid oxygen crisis over COVID-19

KATHMANDU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Nepal received a second shipment of China-donated oxygen cylinders on Sunday as the Himalayan country is facing a short supply of medical oxygen for a growing number of COVID-19 patients.

A Nepal Airlines plane landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu at 2:30 p.m. local time with oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators from China, Dim Prasad Poudel, managing director of the airline, told Xinhua.

On Tuesday, Nepal received the first batch of oxygen cylinders from China.

KATHMANDU, May 15 (NNN-XINHUA) – Subhash Karki has supervised the cremation of dead bodies for the last three years, along the bank of Bagmati River, near the holy Lord Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.

But never in his life Karki, who was appointed a year ago as chief coordinator of the electric crematorium, run by the Pashupati Area Development Trust, thought he would cremate dead bodies day and night.

Nepal: Crematoriums overwhelmed due to increase in COVID-19 deaths

Kathmandu, May 14 (PTI) Crematoriums in Nepal, including one attached to the famed Pashupatinath Temple, have become overwhelmed by dead bodies of COVID-19 patients during the second wave of coronavirus in the Himalayan nation, according to a media report on Friday.

The Ministry of Health and Population on Thursday reported 214 more deaths from COVID-19. The figure includes deaths of other days, it said.The total death toll now stands at 4,466. Total number of coronavirus cases in the country is 431,191.

Nepal: K P Sharma Oli sworn in as Prime Minister

Kathmandu, May 14 (PTI) K P Sharma Oli was sworn in as Nepal's Prime Minister for the third time on Friday, days after he lost a vote of confidence in Parliament.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Oli, 69, at a ceremony at Shital Niwas, after he was reappointed to the post on Thursday night as the Opposition parties failed to secure majority seats in Parliament to form a new government.

Oli, the Chairman of CPN-UML, lost a crucial trust vote in the House of Representatives on Monday.

KATHMANDU, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on Monday after more than three years in power, opening door for formation of a new government in the country.

Against 136 votes needed to win the vote of confidence in the House with 271 lawmakers, Oli just managed to garner 93 votes. The lawmakers from Madhav Nepal faction (UML) within his party CPN-UML did not vote for him and abstained from the voting process.

Nepal President Bhandari initiates govt formation, gives 3 days time to parties to stake claim

Kathmandu, May 11 (PTI) Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called on parties to form a new majority government by Thursday after the one headed by the embattled Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli lost a trust vote.

The Office of the President, in a statement on Monday, said President Bhandari has decided to invite parties to form a majority government pursuant to Article 76 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.
