India: Shocked to see 1 lakh Gorkha people excluded from NRC: Mamata

Kolkata, Sep 1 (PTI) Iterating that the Centre must ensure no genuine Indians are left out of the NRC, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said she was "shocked" to find out that one lakh people of the Gorkha community have been excluded from the list.

The TMC supremo insisted that "justice should be meted out to all Indian brothers and sisters".

India: Sitting MLA, Kargil veteran left out of NRC

Guwahati, Aug 31 (PTI) A Kargil veteran, a sitting and an ex-MLA of the AIDUF were among those whose names were excluded from the final NRC, which was released here on Saturday.

The daughter of Congress MLA Ilias Ali too found her name missing though the legislator and his other family members made it to the updated list.

Kargil war veteran and retired army officer Mohammad Sanaullah, who spent a few days in detention in May after being declared a foreigner by a tribunal, was excluded from the updated list.

India: Death of gangrape victim in Maha: FIR against cop for 'inaction'

Mumbai, Sep 1 (PTI) AnvFIR has been registered against a police inspector in Mumbai for "inaction" in the case of allegedrape of a 19-year-old woman who later died at a hospital, police said on Sunday.

The woman, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste as per her lawyer, was allegedly raped by four of her friends in Mumbai in the first week of July. She was later admitted to a state-run hospital in Maharashtra's Aurangabad city where she died on August 28.

50 Killed By U.S.-Led Airstrikes In Syria’s Idlib

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept 1 (NNN-SANA) – At least 50 rebels, mainly commanders, were killed on Saturday, by U.S.-led airstrikes, that targeted a meeting of rebel commanders, in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, the meeting grouped commanders of the Hurras al-Deen and Ansar al-Tawhid groups, both allied with the al-Qaeda.

It said, the death toll exceeds 50, noting that more bodies are being discovered.

After 15 years of detention, 2021 trial date set for 5 Guantanamo Bay detainees

31 Aug 2019; MEMO: Five men being held in Guantanamo Bay prison accused of planning and aiding the September 11 terror attacks will go on trial in 2021.

If convicted at the military commission, which combines elements of civilian and military law, the defendants could face the death penalty.

The five detainees include Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, a senior al Qaeda figure who has portrayed himself as the mastermind of the 2001 attacks and other terrorist plots.

Venezuelans to march against US blockade

CARACAS, Aug 31 (NNN-Prensa Latina) — Venezuelans will march in defense of national sovereignty and against the blockade imposed by the United States on the South American nation, according to Francisco Torrealba, vice president of the working class section of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).

The popular mobilization is slated for Saturday, 10:00 a.m. local time, marching from Morelos square to the Miraflores Presidential Palace.

Australia moves Tamil toddlers to remote Christmas Island detention centre

Melbourne, Aug 31 (AFP) A Tamil family of four -- including two Australian-born toddlers -- have been moved to a remote island off the coast of Indonesia, despite a court order blocking deportation, their lawyer said Saturday.

The family -- who are fighting to remain in Australia because they fear persecution in Sri Lanka -- were moved to Christmas Island detention facility overnight, lawyer Carina Ford said, speaking in Melbourne.

India: Final NRC out in Assam, nearly 2 million stare at uncertain future

Guwahati, Aug 31 (PTI) The updated final NRC, which validates bonafide Indian citizens of Assam, was out on Saturday, with over 19 lakh applicants who failed to make it to the list staring at an uncertain future.

A total of 3,30,27,661 people had applied to be included in the NRC. Of them, 3,11,21,004 have been included in the document and 19,06,657 excluded, a statement from the NRC State Coordinator's office said here.

Children among 3,000 detainees in Kashmir

According to a senior local government official who spoke to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity, at least 5 Kashmiri children, under the age of 18, are part of 3,000 people that have been detained in Indian Administered Kashmir since Aug  5.

30 Aug 2019; MEMO: On Tuesday 17-year-old Alaa Yasser Farouk told lawyers that whilst detained she heard officers electrocuting her father and then was threatened with torture if she did not confess to joining and funding the Muslim Brotherhood.

In December 2013 the military-backed government in Egypt labelled the Brotherhood a terrorist group after a suicide bomb hit the police headquarters in Mansoura killing 16 people.
