India: 25,000 school children in Delhi addicted to drugs

New Delhi, July 31 (PTI) Concerns were raised in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday over children falling into the trap of drugs, with a Congress Member saying that 25,000 school children in Delhi have turned drug addicts.

Raising the issue through a Zero Hour mention, T Subbaram Reddy said 25,000 school children in Delhi are addicted to drugs while police has turned a blind eye to the menace.

He said narcotics were easily available and destroying the lives of innocent children not only in Delhi but in the entire North India.

India: National Medical Commission Bill passed by LS

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Lok Sabha on Monday passed the National Medical Commission Bill for replacing the corruption-plagued MCI with a new body, in what has been described by the government as one of the biggest reforms that will end 'inspector raj' in the medical education sector.

The bill also has a provision for making national standards in medical education uniform by proposing that the final year MBBS exam be treated as an entrance test for PG and a screening test for students who graduate in medicine from foreign countries.

India, Myanmar sign defence cooperation agreement

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) India and Myanmar on Monday signed a defence co-operation agreement providing for boosting bilateral military engagement, weeks after the two countries carried out a coordinated operation targeting several militant groups operating in the Northeast.

The pact was inked after Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar's Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing held extensive talks with Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik.

India: Law Minister moves Triple Talaq bill in RS

New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday moved the triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha, saying it has been brought to ensure justice for Muslim women and should not be seen through a political prism.

Urging members to approve 'The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019', he said the practice of triple talaq is continuing despite the Supreme Court banning the same through its judgement.

India: 293 big dams in country over 100 years old

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) As many as 293 big dams in the country are more than 100 years old, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said on Monday as he introduced a bill on dam safety in Lok Sabha.

The bill seeks to set up the National Dam Safety Authority for proper surveillance, inspection and maintenance of specified dams as well as address unresolved issues between states.

India: Azam Khan apologises for his sexist remarks in LS

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Under fire from various quarters, Samajwadi Party member Azam Khan on Monday apologised in Lok Sabha for his sexist remarks against BJP member Rama Devi.

Though Khan had to repeat his apology twice in the House, a visibly peeved Devi said the member has the habit of uttering derogatory words against women.

As soon as the House met for the day, Speaker Om Birla asked Khan, who has come under criticism from members across party lines for his sexist remarks against Devi last Thursday, to speak and he tendered his apology.

HC dismisses plea seeking to declare 'Vande Mataram' national anthem or national song

New Delhi, Jul 26; GANASHAKTI - The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking direction to the Centre to declare 'Vande Mataram' the national anthem, at par with "Jana Gana Mana", or the national song.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said it finds no reason to entertain this petition, while exercising its powers under Article 226 of the Constitution.

"We see no reason to give direction to the respondent (Centre) to declare Vande Mataram as national anthem or national song," the bench said.

India: Mallya approaches SC against confiscation of properties

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya on Saturday approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the confiscation of properties owned by him and his relatives.

In the petition, Mallya has said that no other properties other than that of Kingfisher Airlines facing cases of alleged irregularities should be attached.

On July 11, the Bombay High Court had refused to grant stay on proceedings before a special court on confiscation of Mallya's properties.

India: Delhi court sentences 2 men for raping 15-year-old

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) A court here has declared two men guilty of raping a 15-year-old girl six years ago after befriending her, ruling that the minor's consent for physical relation was inconsequential.

Additional Sessions Judge Umed Singh Grewal sentenced Parvesh Rana (30) and Ashish Sehrawat (41) to jail term already undergone by them during the trial.
