India: Thackeray urges opposition parties to win people's trust

Mumbai, Aug 21 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged the opposition parties to win people's trust and also called upon them to stay united and strong.

He made this appeal during a virtual meeting of opposition leaders convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday.

Talking to reporters, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said, "During the meeting, Thackeray stressed that the parties must win people's trust."

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Merely because an arrest can be made as it is lawful does not mandate that it must be made, the Supreme Court has said, while observing that personal liberty is an important aspect of constitutional mandate.

The apex court said if arrest is made routine, it could cause "incalculable harm" to the reputation and self-esteem of a person.

India firm buys 30% stake in Turkey drone maker

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: A Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) producer, Zyrone Dynamics, has received foreign investment from India worth $1 million.

Thirty per cent of the firm's shares – with a total valuation of $3.5 million – were bought by Indian DCM Shriram Industries, Murat Kanber, co-founder of the Turkish company, told Anadolu Agency.

At this week's International Defence Industries Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul, the two companies signed a partnership agreement, he stressed.

Women at risk of blackmail as a result of Israeli spyware

19 Aug 2021; MEMO: Dozens of women across the Middle East and North Africa who were likely targeted for surveillance by governments using Pegasus spyware are now at a heightened risk of being blackmailed or harassed, tech experts and victims said, Reuters report.

Developed by Israeli tech firm NSO, Pegasus turns a mobile phone into a surveillance device – using its microphone and cameras and accessing and exporting messages, photos and emails without the user's knowledge.

India: Judges should not be swayed by external pressures: CJI

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) Judges are often caught in the dilemma of morality versus legality in quest to deliver justice and it needs moral courage to render an opinion which might displease many, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said on Wednesday while stressing that it is imperative for judges not to be swayed by these external pressures.

The CJI also said impartiality is not an easy quality to possess or apply to the cases and a judge must make a conscious effort to cast aside biases and prejudices.

India: Sunanda Pushkar death case: Delhi court discharges Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) A Delhi court on Wednesday discharged senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in a case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar's death in a luxury hotel here.

Special Judge Geetanjali Goel passed the order in a virtual hearing.

Tharoor thanked the judge, and said it was an absolute torture for last seven-and-a-half-years and that it was a great relief .

India: Jaishankar discusses Afghan situation in bilateral meetings with UNSG, counterparts

United Nations, Aug 18 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed the situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban seized power in Kabul in his bilateral meetings here, including with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Jaishankar arrived in New York Monday as the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, the second time in just over the 10 days that the powerful UN body met under India's Presidency for the month of August to discuss the unravelling situation in the war-torn country.

India: Cooking gas LPG price hiked by Rs 25 per cylinder

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) Domestic cooking gas LPG price on Wednesday was increased by Rs 25 per cylinder - the second straight month of increase in rates.

Subsidised LPG now costs Rs 859 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, according to a price notification of oil companies.

This is the second straight month of a price increase. Rates were hiked by Rs 25.50 per cylinder on July 1.

Non-subsidised LPG rates were increased on August 1 by the same proportion, and now the subsidised cooking gas prices have been raised.

Senior party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala asked where is the Modi government when there are war-like hostilities between states ruled by BJP-NDA and when miscreants are attacking the convoy of Meghalaya Governor and militants firing through the streets.
