Eyes on Russia's ally Belarus as Ukraine's neighbour moves troops

KYIV, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Russia's ally Belarus said on Wednesday it was moving troops and military hardware to counteract what it called a threat of terrorism, amid signs Moscow could be putting pressure on its loyal client to open a new front in the war against Ukraine.

President Alexander Lukashenko, who relied on Russian troops to put down a popular revolt two years ago, has allowed Belarus to serve as a staging ground for Russia's invasion of their neighbour, but has so far kept his own army from joining it.

Germany raids far-right group over plot to install prince in coup

BERLIN, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Germany on Wednesday detained 25 members and supporters of a far-right group that the prosecutor's office said was preparing a violent overthrow of the state to install as national leader a prince who had sought support from Russia.

Prosecutors said the group was inspired by the deep state conspiracy theories of Germany's Reichsbuerger and QAnon, whose advocates were among those arrested after the storming of the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.

Ukraine warns Iran of "consequences" of arms supplies to Russia

KIEV, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Tuesday warned Iran of the "consequences" of the arms supplies to Russia, the Ukrainian government-run Ukrinform news agency reported.

"Our signal to them (the Iranian side) was very clear: first, either you stop or you will face a set of the most severe consequences. Second, no matter what benefits you have from cooperation with Russia in the supply of drones or other weapons, the negative consequences for you will outweigh any benefits," Kuleba said at an online briefing.

Donors race to get generators, other aid to hard-hit Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — When Russian forces launched a military campaign against infrastructure in Ukraine nearly two months ago, they opened a front that carried the war along power lines, water mains and heating systems to homes, schools, offices and churches.

The government in Kyiv and the Western countries that have backed it with billions in military aid now are scrambling along with the United Nations and aid groups to get blankets, insulation, generators, medical supplies, cash and more essentials into the invaded country as winter looms.

Germany: 25 arrested on suspicion of planning armed coup

BERLIN (AP) — Thousands of police officers carried out raids across much of Germany on Wednesday against suspected far-right extremists who allegedly sought to overthrow the government in an armed coup. Officials said 25 people were detained.

Federal prosecutors said some 3,000 officers conducted searches at 130 sites in 11 of Germany’s 16 states. While police raids against the far right are not uncommonin the country — still sensitive to its grim Nazi past — the scale of the operation was unusual.

Bulgaria accused of shooting dead refugee at Turkiye-Bulgaria border

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Bulgaria has been accused of shooting a refugee, after a new video emerged showing a young Syrian man being fired at on the border with Turkiye, Sky News reports.

Footage taken on 3 October near the Bulgarian-Turkish border fence shows 19-year-old Abdullah El Rustum fall to the ground after a bullet goes through his hand and into his chest.

He has claimed he was shot by Bulgarian border officials after they caught his group illegally entering the country and pushed them back to Turkiye.

Russia: Cabinet to launch mechanism banning oil sales at price cap by end of 2022, says Novak

MOSCOW, December 6. /TASS/: Moscow plans to create and launch a mechanism banning Russian companies from selling oil to countries that operate within the framework of the West’s price cap by the end of 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters.

"Yes, I am confident it will be done," he said, replying to a question on the topic. "We are currently hashing over and fine-tuning the decision, and discussing it with companies," Novak added.
