PWD, KDA to repair roads

KANPUR: The Public Works Department and the Kanpur Development Authority will take on the task of repairing potholes on the city roads.

One road extends from Ratanlal Nagar-Shastri Chowk-Sachhan Guest House-Kendrachal Colony to Kidwai Nagar Road. Another road stretches from Rocket Tiraha-Meghdoot Trihaa-Bada Churaha-Chunniganj-Govindpuri Pul, up to Barra By-pass. Yet another one starts from Hamirpur road-Deputy Padav-Afeem Kothi to Baradevi Naubasta.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister announces Cow Minister

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Cow Minister, a new portfolio in his ministry, to serve the cow better.

According to The Indian Minister, “Chouhan made the announcement in Khajuraho where a function to give awards to gaushalas was organised. The announcement comes days before the model code of conduct kicks-in the poll-bound state”.

Married woman raped at gunpoint in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Sep 29 : A 26-year-old married woman was allegedly raped by her neighbour at gunpoint when she was alone in her house in a village in Shamli district, police said Saturday.

Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said the incident occurred at Jandheri village under Kairana Police Station Friday.

According to complaint lodged by the victim's husband, their neighbour, Gaurav Kumar, 27, entered the house in his absence and raped her at gunpoint, the CO said.

Petrol, diesel prices at record highs; check latest fuel prices in major cities

New Delhi; 30 Sep 2018; PTI: Petrol, diesel prices hit another record high on Sunday as the upward trend in fuel prices continued. Petrol prices were increased by 9-10 paise per litre on Sunday while diesel prices were hiked by 16-17 paise across the four metro cities.

In Delhi, petrol was retailing at Rs 83.49 per litre while diesel was sold at Rs 74.79 after today's hike. In the country's business capital Mumbai, petrol price moved closer to the Rs 91 per litre mark to Rs 90.84 while diesel was priced at Rs 79.40.

Court grants bail to co-accused in Asaram sexual assault case

Jodhpur, Sept 29 (PTI) The Rajasthan High Court on Saturday suspended the sentence of a co-accused in Asaram sexual assault case and granted her bail, her lawyer said here.

Justice Vijay Bishnoi granted the relief to Sanchita Gupta alias Shilpi, who was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a trial court, on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two surety bonds each of Rs 1 lakh.

"She had challenged her sentence in the high court. The arguments on the appeal had completed on Wednesday and the court had reserved the order, said her counsel Mahesh Bora.

1,500 TN fishermen driven away by Lankan Navy: Ass'n leader

Rameswaram (TN), Sept 29 (PTI) Around 1,500 fishermen from here returned to the shores without fish catch Sunday after they were allegedly driven away by Sri Lankan Navay near Katchatheevu, a fishermen association leader said.

The fishermen, who had put out to sea Saturday in over 275 mechanised boats, were fishing near Katchatheevu when the Lankan Naval personnel in four patrol vessels allegedly snapped the fishing nets of 10 boats, Mechanised Boats Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja told reporters here.

Define the term 'urban naxal', asks Romila Thapar

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Eminent historian Romila Thapar, who petitioned the Supreme Court against the house arrest of five Left-leaning activists, has asked government to define the phrase 'urban naxal', saying either they do not understand the meaning of the term or the activists like her do not.

Talking on the house arrests of five activists Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha, she said these are the people who are fighting against social injustice.

Tanneries to be closed for Kumbh Mela

KANPUR: In view of forthcoming Kumbh Mela on Sangam in Allahabad, the leather tanneries in Jajmau will remain closed for three months.

This order was passed to make the Ganges clean.

A decision to this effect has been taken in a meeting chaired by Kalpana Awasthi, Principal Secretary (Environment). However, the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will make the final decision, in a meeting to be held on October 5.
