India: Uttarakhand CM Dhami's PRO suspended

Dehradun, Dec 12 (PTI) Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's PRO Nandan Singh Bisht has been suspended, days after he had written to the Bageshwar SP asking him to cancel the challans of three vehicles, official sources here said on Sunday.

Bisht has been suspended with immediate effect and a probe ordered into the episode, they said.

India: Kejriwal promises free pilgrimage scheme in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Nov 21 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday promised to introduce a free pilgrimage scheme for the people of different communities in Uttarakhand if the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in the state.

Under the scheme, Hindus will be taken to Ayodhya, Muslims to Ajmer Sharif and Sikhs to Kartarpur Sahib, Kejriwal announced at a press conference in Haridwar.

India: Kidney racket accused arrested from Assam

Dehradun, Nov 16 (PTI) A man allegedly involved in an inter-state kidney transplant racket busted in 2017 in Uttarakhand has been arrested from Guwahati, police said on Tuesday.

Accused Akshay Raut, absconding since 2017 carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on his arrest was nabbed in Assam's capital on November 14 and was brought here on a five-day transit remand on Tuesday, Dehradun SSP Janmejay Khanduri told reporters.

He is the son of racket kingpin Amit Raut who is among 17 accused already arrested in the case, he said.

India: BJP vandals target Khurshid's Nainital home over his book

Dehradun/New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Congress leader Salman Khurshid's house in Uttarakhand's Nainital was vandalised on Monday amid the row over his recent book in which he draws a comparison between Hindutva and ISIS.

Referring to a photograph of people who targeted his house, the former Union minister told PTI that they were carrying the BJP flag and the party should issue a denial .

India: Uttarakhand rain-related disaster toll climbs to 77

Dehradun, Oct 24 (PTI) Bodies of five out of six trekkers feared dead on Suderdhunga trek in Bageshwar district were found on Sunday as the cumulative death toll in rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand rose to 77.

However, search is still on for another trekker in the area, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) sources here said.

Meanwhile, 19 people stranded in Kafni glacier were brought to their village Chuni and 33 stuck in Pindari glacier were evacuated to safety, they said.

India: 88 rescued as death toll rises to 75 due to rain in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, Oct 22 (PTI) The death count in Uttarakhand rose to 75 on Friday as rescue workers found more bodies and also brought to safety score of stranded people after the rains that recently lashed the state.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) men rescued 65 trekkers, including six foreigners, stranded near Bageshwar's Pindari and Kafni glaciers. Twenty-three people were rescued from from Darma Valley of Pithoragarh.

India: Jim Corbett Park may be renamed 'Ramganga National Park'

Dehradun, Oct 6 (PTI) Jim Corbett National Park, a world-renowned tiger reserve in Uttarakhand, may be renamed as Ramganga National Park in the future.

Union Minister of State for Forest and Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey hinted about the change in name of India's first national park which is spread over an area of about 521 km. He recently mentioned it in a museum guest book on his tour of the park.

India: Chardham yatra to begin on Saturday after HC vacates its stay

Dehradun, Sept 17 (PTI) The Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand will begin on Saturday after its prolonged suspension due to COVID-19.

A day after the Uttarakhand High Court vacated its stay on Chardham Yatra, the state government on Friday issued a detailed SOP to start the yatra from Saturday with strict adherence to COVID-19 norms.

Imposing a daily limit on the number of pilgrims visiting the Himalayan temples, the SOP put a cap of 1,000 pilgrims daily on Badrinath, 800 on Kedarnath, 600 on Gangotri and 400 on Yamunotri.

India: U'khand govt seeks start of chardham yatra

Nainital, Sep 7 (PTI) The Uttarakhand government on Tuesday approached the high court here seeking the resumption of the Chardham Yatra.

However, the high court stated that it cannot remove the ban on the yatra unless directed by the Supreme Court where the matter is pending.

The high court had put a stay on the Chardham Yatra on June 28, citing the lack of proper health facilities in districts through which Chardham Yatra passes and the threat of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

India: Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya resigns

Dehradun, Sep 8 (PTI) Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya resigned on Wednesday, two years before completing her tenure.

She tendered her resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind, a Rajbhawan official said.

She has resigned for personal reasons, he said.

Maurya was sworn in as the governor of Uttarakhand on August 26, 2018 taking over from Krishna Kant Paul at the end of his five-year tenure.

She had completed three years in office as the governor last month.
