01 Sep 2021; MEMO: Officials in Tunisia are working to set up fabricated charges against the Ennahda movement claiming it is involved in acts of terrorism, ahead of launching a security campaign against the group, details leaked to Arabi21 appear to show.
A source familiar with Tunisian presidential affairs revealed to Arabi21 that a plan is underway to falsely implicate Ennahda and its leader, Rached Ghannouchi, in recruiting armed men to carry out terrorist attacks as a way to justify President Kais Saied's decision to overthrow the movement, freeze government and dismiss the prime minister late last June.
The plan was orchestrated by a senior official in the presidential office who is personally and directly supervising the details of the operation, the source explained, adding: "Two Salafi jihadists who are currently in detention are being prepared to be presented as terrorists linked to the Ennahda movement."
The plan "aims to create false links between the movement and the armed organisations in Libya, and then justify the arrest of Ennahda leaders and elements in Tunisia."
This comes as Tunisian media has been reporting rumours about the infiltration of dozens of terrorists into Tunisia from Libya to carry out attacks.
