Kampala, Jun 19 (AP-PTI) Uganda is tightening its lockdown measures to try and stem a surge in coronavirus infections in the East African country that is seeing an array of variants.

The measures announced late Friday by President Yoweri Museveni include a ban on private and public transportation within and across districts, including in the capital Kampala. Only vehicles carrying cargo and those transporting the sick or essential workers are permitted to operate on the roads.

KAMPALA, June 18 (Reuters) - Uganda's president Yowreri Museveni on Friday introduced sweeping new anti-coronavirus measures including a ban on all vehicular movement except for essential workers to help curb a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic gripping the nation.

The east African country, like most other African peers had been left relatively unscathed by the first wave. It suddenly started experiencing a steep surge in COVID-19 infections last month after authorities confirmed they had detected presence of the Indian coronavirus variant. 

KAMPALA, June 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 30 Covid-19 patients are reported to have died at Uganda’s Mulago National Referral Hospital on Tuesday night after the facility’s oxygen supply malfunctioned, highly-placed sources said.

Officials were reluctant to discuss the matter which, if true, presents the biggest single-day Covid-19 death reported at the country’s largest Covid-19 treatment centre since the outbreak of the disease in the country in March 2020.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ethiopians will vote Monday in a landmark election overshadowed by reports of famine in the country’s war-hit Tigray region and beset by logistical problems that mean some people won’t be able to vote until September.

The election is the centerpiece of a reform drive by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose rise to power in 2018 seemed to signal a break with decades of authoritarian rule and led to his Nobel Peace Prize the following year. He has described the poll as “the nation’s first attempt at free and fair elections.”

KAMPALA, Jun 11 (NNN-IRIN) – Uganda and the Czech Republic, yesterday signed a defence cooperation agreement, according to a military statement issued here.

The two countries will establish and enhance bilateral defence cooperation, the statement said.

Charles Engola, Uganda’s outgoing minister of state for defence and veteran affairs, and Tomas Kopecny, visiting Czech Republic deputy minister of defence for industrial cooperation division, signed the agreement.

KAMPALA, June 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni re-imposed a strict lockdown that included the closure of schools and the suspension of inter-district travel to help beat back a surge in COVID-19 cases in the East African country.

The new measures, which took effect from Monday morning, include the closure of all educational institutions, some bans on travel, the shutdown of weekly open markets, and the suspension of church services.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — An Ethiopian national working for an Italian charity was killed in the war-hit Tigray region on Saturday after he was “hit by a stray bullet”, according to his employer.

Negasi Kidane, from the Tigrayan city of Adigrat, had been employed by the International Committee for the Development of Peoples since 2016. The group is known by its Italian initials, CISP.

He is the ninth aid worker reported killed in Tigray since fighting broke out there nearly seven months ago.

KAMPALA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Landslides triggered by heavy downpour on Sunday killed three people and left a child injured in the western Ugandan district of Kasese, a humanitarian relief agency said here.

Irene Nakasiita, spokesperson for the Uganda Red Cross Society said in a statement that two children were killed and another injured after a landslide partially destroyed a family house at Katulu village. The injured child has been referred to Kilembe Hospital.

KAMPALA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday said oil revenues must be invested in avenues that create jobs and wealth.

Museveni, according to a State House statement, was in Tanzania to witness the signing of the Host Government Agreement between Tanzania and the oil companies going to construct an oil pipeline from the oil wells in Uganda to the Tanzanian seaport of Tanga.

KAMPALA, May 12 (NNN-Xinhua) — Uganda’s incumbent President Yoweri Museveni was sworn in on Wednesday to serve for the sixth five-year term in office.

Chief Justice, Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo swore in Museveni as the president of the East African country at Kololo Independence Grounds in the capital Kampala.
