Chinese rights lawyer disappears on prison release date

Beijing, Feb 28 (AP) The wife of a prominent Chinese human rights lawyer says he has disappeared on the day of his scheduled release from prison.

Jin Bianling says her husband Jiang Tianyong's whereabouts Thursday are unknown. She says supporters arrived at his jailhouse in central Henan province only to be told that he had already been picked up and taken away by unknown individuals.

'No agreement reached' at Trump-Kim summit in Vietnam

28 Feb 2019; DW: The White House announced that no agreement on denuclearization was reached between Kim and Trump.

When asked if sanctions were the reason the agreement fell through, Trump said: "It was about the sanctions, basically they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldn’t do that. They [North Korea] were willing to denuclearize a large portion of the areas that we wanted … but we had to walk away from that."

"I'm never afraid to walk away from a deal," Trump added.

US and North Korea will sign 'Hanoi declaration'

HANOI, February 28. /TASS/. The United States and North Korea have coordinated at least three points in the joint document that US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will sign at the end of Hanoi summit, a diplomatic source told TASS on Thursday.

The document will be called the "Hanoi declaration," the source said adding that it will define the term "denuclearization," determine future steps by both sides, and elaborate on tasks and issues that the US and North Korea will continue discussing the the future.

Japan's industrial output drops 3.7 pct in January

TOKYO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japan's factory output dropped in January from a month earlier, the government said in a report on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, industrial output here declined 3.7 percent in January, following a 0.1 percent drop in December.

The ministry also said in its preliminary report that the seasonally adjusted index of output at factories and mines stood at 100.8 against the 2015 base of 100.

DPRK, U.S. leaders meet in Hanoi, Vietnam for 2nd summit

HANOI, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump met Wednesday night in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi for their second summit to discuss concrete ways for peace on and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Kim and Trump shook hands and smiled in their first encounter at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel in Hanoi, where the two leaders were slated to briefly sit down one-on-one before having a social dinner, opening their two-day summit.

Trump hails North Korea's 'awesome' potential

27 Feb 2019; DW: Ahead of talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said there was "awesome" potential and "great opportunity" for North Korea, which would be sooner realized if it committed to denuclearization.

"Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth. North Korea would be the same, and very quickly, if it would denuclearize," Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump arrives in Hanoi for 2nd DPRK-U.S. summit

HANOI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at the Noi Bai International Airport of Hanoi Tuesday evening for the second summit with Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

After disembarking from Air Force One, Trump shook hands and talked with officials who were at the airport to greet him, before heading for his hotel.

Kim arrived in Hanoi earlier on Tuesday morning.

Chinese, Russian FMs meet on closer ties

China to invest 45 mln USD to protect Potala Palace's ancient documents

LHASA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will invest 300 million yuan (44.9 million U.S. dollars) in the next 10 years in its greatest efforts of protection and utilization of ancient documents in the Potala Palace, a World Heritage site in Lhasa, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

At present, a total of nearly 40,000 books of precious ancient documents in Chinese, Tibetan, Manchu, Mongolian and Sanskrit are preserved in the Potala Palace, said the management office of the Potala Palace Monday.
