Yemen Nobel Laureate mourns Emirati rights activist, asks British auth to investigate

 Tawakkol Karman

22 June 2021; MEMO: Yemeni Nobel Peace Laureate and human rights advocate Tawakkol Karman is mourning Emirati human rights activist Alaa Al-Siddiq, 33, who was killed in a car accident in London on Saturday.

"With Alaa Al-Siddiq's death, the UAE and the Arab world have lost a brave voice that had long defended the values of freedom, justice and human rights," wrote Karman on Twitter. "Whatever the cause, Alaa's death has shed light on the freedom of political detainees in the UAE and the Arab world." She called on the British authorities to investigate the accident.

According to ALQST human rights organisation, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Al-Siddiq's death. It has raised this possibility with the Metropolitan Police and other authorities in London. The police, it said, will publish the results of the investigation into the accident as soon as they are available.
